"Someone please make it stop!"

Surely "Glorious" Goodwood has once and for all been exposed for the overwatered punters' gaspit it is thus far this week.

Still, a six-figure multiple return in the next 48 hours could change all that.

Then it's Saturday, the final day, and the decs are about to be confirmed.

Last year in the Stewards' Cup I wanted Apollo One for the dollars and it got touched off by another one up the Stands' rail.

I'm going one better this year!

I'm starting to construct a "Stewfolio" and will have more to say on this after seeing the state of the West Sussex terrain at close of play today.

When I looked at the Turftrax map last weekend it was showing a substantial tract of good-to-soft ground from the top turn down to the straight yet the word 'watering' also appeared in the report. That did get me wondering but the various forecasts were showing warm, sunny weather for most of the week with only one suggesting some passing showers for yesterday.

The watering followed by the rain is, I think, responsible for most of the shock results and unsatisfactory races but the jockeys also have to shoulder a lot of the blame for being tactical dwarves. They're making Galway look like Sandown.

It is amazing that after the driest spring and summer on record, that there wasn’t a bit of firm in the going, ahead of this meeting. I assume the justification for all of the watering is to protect the horses, but we have seen a few breaking down this week there and before the rain came yesterday the surface looked like it was breaking upon top. So the plan doesn’t seem to be working. It doesn’t look a reliable surface to me and probably explains some of the strange results (although, in the main I should say I do like strange results).

Apologies for being late back to this, but naturally you'll all appreciate that, since they weighed in for The Golden Mile, I've been posing for a platinum statue of me riding Rhoscolyn in triumph through the Gates Of Valhalla.

I've got a quintet of beasts on my mind for this and they are: Apollo One, Purosangue, Twilight Jet, Get It, and Hammer The Hammer.

I won't bore you all with what you can find in the form book anyway, but I wouldn't get too hung up on the draw as I think the winner could come from either side.

Down the middle might be more problematical, but I can't leave out Twilight Jet because the form-book won't tell you I almost had it right off with him on Derby Day, 5f is no use to the old boy any more and he might just do a Rhoscolyn on his second appearance of the week at the overwatered, rained on, yet spongelike West Sussex gaspit.

In fact, they're going to call it "Glorious Gaspit" next year....but that's another (tall) story.

The first words on this thread were "Someone please make it stop!" - I suspect some may be saying that to themselves as they read your post.

However, I'm not amongst them. Well done and I think Platinum is a good choice for your statue. According to Google, it is one of the rarest elements on earth and is an excellent catalyst, speeding up reactions without being consumed. Sounds about right.

As for the Stewards Cup, and after watching the King George over 5f this afternoon, I was a bit concerned that the draw looked like it had swung towards the low drawn horses. Concerned, because the three I've backed so far are all drawn high. Still, who knows, what it will be like tomorrow

I know it's mad, but I'm going to take all of your five on with:

Jakajaro (backed 25/1)
Strike Red (backed 25/1)
Seven Questions (backed 80/1)

I've also added Vadream (33/1) and Orazio (28/1). so I have some representation on the other side.

Sounds like a good idea for a competition, picking 5 in these Heritage Handicaps.

My stewfolio is wrecked.with NRs the main one was Holkham Bay.
Billyjo,zaher,sondad,and another.
Jackajaro 40s and strike red 25/1 are my main 2.
A couple of outsiders.
Commanche falls and my cliff horse twilight falls (which I haven't backed yet)

2 relatively short priced fancies for the Stewards tomorrow, Circe and Elmonjed, one high and one low.
I had a nice bet on Elmonjed last Saturday and thought he won well enough so he would be my stronger fancy and currently he's out to 10/1 which is a very attractive price in my eyes.
Good luck to all.

Drama will do in the Stewards Cup. He ran very well in a big field in October 2023 in the Tatterstalls race. I think they've minded his mark well with him mostly racing on the all weather. I hope tomorrow we'll see the real Drama and my hunch might be right. Tom Marquand is a good booking too.

I like the look of Hallelujah U in the 1.55. He's getting a 3 year old weight allowance and the form when third to Scandanavia last time is now as solid as a rock. 16/1 is a mental each way price. Another misdiagnosis.

Good luck all tomorrow.

Going stick 6.4.

That's up from 5.7 yesterday.

No rain forecast and sunny this morning, cloudy with sunny intervals this "arvo," as those who just find "afternoon" has too many syllables like to say.

Yesterday, Rhoscolyn was 1.38s slow for 1m off OR 95, JM Jungle was 0.77s slow for 5f and Fox Legacy was 1.45s slow for 1m1f.

Draw your own conclusions - I've drawn mine.

Great to see an array of TH "Stewfolios," and hope to see more before post time.

It's Stewards' Cup Day at "Glorious Gas Pit" - enjoy and good luck everyone!

Too many threads on this forum,Takes an age to find the pertinent one.
Really like Yah Mo Be There in the 3.45 - would have probably won the SJP if Jamie (stall 8) had chosen the right side.
As it turned, out, every horse that finished in front of him was drawn lower - where the pace was.
15/2 looks good.

"The 2025 Glorious Goodwood Day 5 (Saturday) thread" - this one is for Day 5 Saturday, sorry if the labelling is confusing.

Let's face it, fella, you just don't like the way I breathe - get over it, life's too short.

Good luck with your bet. 👍

Anyroads...

Today's going map from Turftrax. There has to be a chance it will have dried out a fair bit again by the afternoon with temperatures set to peak at 27C by 3 o'clock. Might make for stickyish ground, though.

I agree. Been that way since it changed format. I end up not reading a lot of stuff. That might actually not be a bad thing...

reet hard is an utter misery guts, with a prejudice against me dating back to the dawn of time.

Never misses what he sees as a chance to have a moan and Hell would freeze over before he looked for a positive in anything I do.

And he'd rather jump in a coffin than attempt conciliation.

Consequently I don't take a blind bit of notice of anything he says.

But Maurice is an even handed, reasonable fellow.

If Maurice and others I consider of similar ilk feel the same way, I'll make this the last big race, or big meeting, thread I create and confine myself to my unofficial blog on chit chat.

I honestly don't mind either way.

I shan't comment further on this thread and shall note all replies I consider objective and free of personal prejudice.

My comment wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular, Ian.

This thread is the most pertinent one for today's Goodwood meeting as it does what it says on the tin.

I put my ratings on Robichaux's race thread for the big one because that also 'cuts to the chase'.

But, generally speaking, there is a lot of clutter and overlap on the forum.

Whilst many may say its a PITA having all the threads to scroll through I think the links you post regularly for the upcoming races are a useful tool as they put the races into the forefront of some peoples minds.
Its as simple as this, if someone doesnt want to read a thread they can scroll past, ignore, unfollow or do whatever they want, but I for one enjoy reading the majority if threads as they are generally started up by people putting some effort into the frum.

I wouldn’t know if the comment about too many threads was directed at you, I didn’t read as that, but had some sympathy with the view as I haven’t been sure about where best to post when I had a thought this week. It was probably worth saying, because others may be thinking the same thing and help ease the congestion slightly.

That said, the threads you start are always clearly labelled and I think start the conversation on the races and meetings that certainly interest me and I hope most people who come on here. So I hope you continue as before, as your contributions help the forum, not hinder it - in my view.

It is very easy reet hard use the IGNORE facility 😉 it works for me so I have no idea what you are actually on about 😎

Live and let live, reet, live and let live.

No notebooks and apart from dear old Rhoscolyn I’m glad to see the back of Goodwood. Hoping to see it finish with a Shadwell double:

Al Aasy in the 1:20 who will likely come from the back and must avoid bad luck. The more it dries out the better.

Mudbir in the 3:45 who only goes up 2lb for his Class3 win at Sandown on his handicap debut. Been well supported this morning.
