I'm interested in Fugitif. Would you say he is on the downgrade? Last time out didn't suit him at the weights or the distance. Ok, he wasn't able to repeat the trick in the December Gold Cup on a decent mark, so one might ask why is he going to go one better in the Plate now at 10? But it's been done before in this race ... If he has another big race in him it could be next week.

The Mildmay Of Flete looks gruesome to me.

Conflated is thrown in on old form, but he's almost as ancient as me.

Jagwar looks sure to go well, but he's no price whatsoever.

I have to back Riaan at the price. It smacks of being trained for it. Beyond that, I’d favour the first-season novices which I’ve highlighted. Jagwar could find the 10lbs but it might not be enough to win so I can let it go as short odds. Thecompanysergeant was a good fourth in an open G1 (heavy) on only its third chase last season behind Spillane’s Tower which then won the G1 novice at Punchestown before progressing to such an extent that it went off 11/4f for the King George. Thecompanysergeant was kept to less exalted company and stayed in the mid-130s. It was possibly targeting the €200k Kerry National but didn’t make the cut. It would be no surprise if either this or the Irish National is the target. It made a very promising debut for the stable over hurdles last time and if it can find 10lbs for the switch back to fences it could be very dangerous here. . This would be my main bet in the race. Stablemate Individualiste is also worth a punt at long odds with the claimer able to do the weight. An Peann Dearg has maybe played its hand a bit so I’ll stick with the above selections for now.

A minefield of a race and a lot of them appear to be running as a triumph of hope over experience. One of those is maybe Ginny’s Destiny who would be bang there at his best, which he hasn’t got near this season and he would probably like a bit more juice in the ground.

When I did the entire day's card on Tuesday it struck me as an incredibly tough one, not just in terms of studying but also in terms of numbers, paucity of form, unknown quantities, amateur jockeys, conditionals, etc.

It took me a proper age to get through it so much so that collapsed into bed about 11pm totally drained and thinking if it was all worth it. To be honest, if yesterday had worked out badly for me I'd probably not have got round to studying Friday's card!
