This historic (used to be run at Alexandra Park, nestling in the shadow of Alexandra Palace) 1m2f contest for 3yos at Newbury this coming Saturday is a favourite of mine and there are 14 entries.

Ante-Post betting link when I see one

I tend more to follow the form of this race rather than bet on it.

It often throws up nice future winners.
Typically astute comment from you, imo, Maurice.

I'm pretty sure I know what the weights will be, but on this occasion I'm going to wait for confirmation tomorrow before getting stuck into the contest.

Given Bay Bridge won this four years ago, the temptation is to look for that potential future Group 1 horse in the field.

But it's not always like that and I quite like arguably the least "sexy" contender in the field on paper.

Circus Of Rome fetched only €15,000 as a yearling and is with Richard Hughes, who thus far hasn't set the world alight as a trainer the way he did as a jockey and who I last saw looking ravenous and making short work of a free meal in the O&T at Kempton Park one cold winter Wednesday evening.

But this son of Circus Maximus is out of a dam who won at 1m2f, two half brothers also scored at the trip, he's looked progressive on the AW, winning at Wolverhampton in March, and you can absolutely ignore his run in that race I like at Sandown Park, where everything that could go wrong duly did go wrong and he never got into the race.

He's a pound lower now, is out to 16/1 and may well go bigger still - I need to know it runs, though.

Given the yard's record in the race, I have to think Wave Rider must be regarded as their best-handicapped middle-distance horse at this stage of the season. 16/1 but I'm not getting involved yet.

For me, this race, a bit like the classic trial races, is one in which ratings are pretty meaningless since there's no way of knowing which has improved the most over the winter.

I've taken 7/1 Wave Rider without studying the form but studying the form probably wouldn't have found me any of the yard's previous winners of the race.

It's a bit of a blind bet but at least we know what type the yard runs in it.
