Loved that horse too. I'm sure it got beat by blushing groom and owner took a hissy fit and took him back to the states.1977 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood a horse called J.O.Tobin trained by Noel Murless ridden by Lester Piggott.
I was stood on the rails and Lester gave it one crack of the whip and was back on the bridle in virtually the same movement.
The horse won effortlessly and I honestly think it didn't know it had been in a race.
The horse proved its worth back in the states famously ending Seattle Slews unbeaten run.
It's funny that as you get older you cannot remember what happened last month yet you can vividly remember a day from 1977.Loved that horse too. I'm sure it got beat by blushing groom and owner took a hissy fit and took him back to the states.
I was incredibly lucky to see alleged the first time I went racing. Was up against the derby runner, hot Grove, and thought as another improving ballydoyle horse would be a good battle. Got 5/2 and little did we know he'd end up horse of the year and 135 rating. Teenoso at the derby. Had the second at 33/1 and could have won a lot of dough if the first 2 were reversed but was pleased to see Lester get his 9th Derby. Went on to win the king george. Needed the right ground and was a hard one to get fit I believe.
All along, the French filly, was a massive horse and some machine.
Remember watching that meeting at home. J o tobin was a great looking horse. It's funny that as you get older you cannot remember what happened last month yet you can vividly remember a day from 1977.
On that day Sea Anchor ridden by Joe Mercer for Dick Hern won the opening race carrying 10 stone 2 pounds and the next race was won by Wollow ridden by Frankie Dettori's father.
But the stand out performance was Lester on J.O.Tobin.
It was red hot that day ( I remember a friend of mine that day who was very conscious of his appearance using hairspray only to be harassed by wasps all day on the course).Remember watching that meeting at home. J o tobin was a great looking horse.
Good call.Flat: Not been to any good meetings.
Jumps: seen all the champs race somewhere since 1990.
My most memorable was without a doubt Carvill's Hill in the Welsh Grand National. Top weight (11st:12) went into a massive lead off the first bend and destroyed a field that included the next Gold Cup winner in Cool Ground (11st:6) and the next Grand National winner Party Politics (10st:7)
