It's a tear-jerker, for me: the most beautiful. All the more so for being performed by a counter-tenor. I've heard a woman singing it but the counter-tenor male voice just works. He's the master, this guy. I'd never heard of him, only the music. Usually, with the most famous note, it is held for a very long time, Scholl cuts off the note sharply, which is unusual but really shows the feeling in the piece.

Not sure if this link will work. I was sitting in the car years ago waiting for my daughter to feed her horse. I was, unusual for me, listening to classic fm and made a not of this music (just happened to have pen and paper with me). I got the local library to get the dvd for me which I then copied onto a tape. Sadly the conductor was, I think, imprisoned a while back which somewhat sours my love of the music.
