It’s a grand day’s racing, for sure. A minefield, of course, but if I’m to be blown up, this is the way to go.

The feature of the day, with apologies to the Fighting Fifth, is the Hennessey which is always a race guaranteed to throw up future winners; it’s a class act, isn’t it. It’s a race that has confounded me over the years, the winner frustratingly elusive but it’s helped me find scores of subsequent winners. As handicaps go, it’s gold and if you love your chasing, it’s an annual feast.

Honestly, I’ve been poring over the form for the last week, as I’m sure we all have, and I’ve come up with a choice of three. I write ‘choice’ but they’d still come under the heading of ‘guesses’.

I suppose I’m expecting the winner to be an underexposed type, something that has scope for improvement.

My first is Blizzard Of Oz. He has the look of a ‘quiet’ one. He’s lightly raced, open to improvement and will definitely appreciate the trip.

Secondly, by a whisker: Gorgeous Tom. He ran a corker in the Browns last March and that’s top form, for sure. I do have a soft spot for class horses dropping into handicaps. This is one such. I think the breeding warrants a good test. I have a niggling doubt about the stable form but Jockey O’Keefe has a great record with his Bromhead rides in the UK.

I suppose some might say that Bromhead’s other candidate, Monty’s Star. Sits at the top of the handicap to help his stablemate further down the weights but he’s another who has class about him, having run in some top races and has acquitted himself handsomely. Indeed, his Gold Cup run was one such effort, a race run at a terrific gallop; top class.

If I was to have one bet today, it would be

Hunter Legend 12.30 Newbury

He made some fair old headway up the hill in the PPower and, given that his breeding screams 3m+, this extra 2f will be to his taste.

An Ew Lucky 15:

Goraibhmaithagat - Fairyhouse 11.36

Hunter Legend – Newbury 12.30

The Big Breac – Newcastle 1.25

Hold That Taut – Newcastle 3.15

Good luck!

I should probably be backing Hunter Legend after I was on him for the PP, and said afterwards he'd be better over a slightly longer trip. I just worry if two weeks is a long enough time to recover from that day, where I think he had a hard race.

I like Eyed aswell and there's been a fair few quid for that horse according to oddschecker. I'm a bit torn really. I could just swerve the race altogether betting wise. I reckon backers might get 6 or 7/1 for Hunter Legend by off time, if this money continues for Eyed.

Good luck today, Yorick.

Hiya mate.

To be honest, I think he'd improve for going over 3m+, given his breeding.

Tough day, Yorick. If it turns out to be a Venetia Williams benefit day you'll likely have two winners at least and I suspect there will be several happy faces come late afternoon.

Good luck with yours, all look great on paper.

Good luck!
Hold That Taught (14/1) raced noticeably wide around Bangor on his first run this season and wasn't beaten that far in the end. It's not a strong race for the first prize of nearly £40,000, and trainer/owner/jockey won it last year with Frero Banbou.

He's on my list too

I'm a master punter on paper!

My main concern is that last time out he was under the pump for a lot of the race. When the race was run, I imagined that they were giving him a right good work out and he needed it.

A lovely start to the the day as Mark Walsh just sits there and does absolutely nothing but looks super - animated as he approaches the judges' eye. No, the horse didn't jump well but Walsh's body language showed that he was quite content to just watch the action. He would have needed binoculars to sight the rear ends of the jockeys in front.

If that's a sign of my racing today, I'm going back to bed.

I mean, is there anything more frustrating that sitting there and watching that?

Ugh!

One of the weakest renewals I can recall.

So sick. my final choice was between HL and the winner but I thought that BB might be needing 3m these days given his breeding.

I hope you did him ew, yeah?

Awful run. Simply never looked happy. Maybe they'll step up to 3m with this one.
The Big Breac – Newcastle 1.25 Not sure he stayed the marathon trip

Hold That Taut – Newcastle 3.15
A dog.

Good luck!
All in all some great sport with some lousy backing.
Oh well. C'est la guerre
