My purely personal opinion re the clutch of individual race threads that seems to have appeared recently...

It's pissing me off.

Then again, a lot of things are pissing me off these days.

(Happy new year...)

I see we have lots of other sections to the forum such as Principal Races etc but I wanted to post a thread on there but it didn't look like it was going to let me?

These sections need populating. If you see threads that ought to be moved to the Flat racing section, please let me know. You can PM me these URLs to keep it organized.

At the moment it seems most people are posting their threads in one forum section "General Racing Topics" which I am trying to avoid

General Racing Topics seems to me to be the most-read section and I'm not sure why such a popular forum hub is something you'd want to avoid.

But your forum, your rules.

Nope - not my rules, it's about SEO optimisation. That may be the most read section because people post there by habit. :D

This is a massive forum with loads of topics. Google and most search engine algorithms downgrade threads that do not include any key words. Loading all threads into a "General Racing Topics" is not only lazy, it is SEO stupid and prevents this forum from attracting new folks looking for a horse racing forum to join.

There are loads of forum sections that are hidden at the moment. These are sections that need populating with current threads. This was something that was going to be done some time ago by the moderators. But it seems that I am the last man standing. LOL

But this is something that can be done.

MisterB I have repied to you via DM re "Point to Point" thread which I consider is a good move.
I know the amount of work that goes into running a Forum and I am sure that you do not need any advice but I will just pass on to you "Do what makes it easier for yourself"
The other comment I will ask is why do we need and individual thread for each big race surely one for the day of the race or one for a meeting where the races are would surfice ? ie 1 thread for Cheltenham as opposed to 7 X 4.......

Loading all threads into a "General Racing Topics" is not only lazy, it is SEO stupid
Sorry for being "lazy" and "stupid" - I didn't realise posting here was paid work - I think I'm owed about two years's back salary (others may have bigger claims) - or that we were all expected to care about SEO stuff.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is an underrated saying IMO but, like I said, you call the shots so you can do as you please.

You might be glad to know that's my last word on the subject.

From a purely personal point of view, I would like to know if there is a way of hiding (from my screen) sections and/or threads which are of no interest to me. Not seeing them would make the forum infinitely more navigable for me.

Imo the initial forum index now looks like a mile long car pile up.

The sections Other sports and General racing topics is done correctly imo. I.e it says other sports with the latest thread posted on if you want to see what other threads are posted on other sports you simply click on it and there they are.

However threads like Members blogs have all blogs displayed before you click on it. The New section for what is primarily "Big race Discussion" all threads are visable before opening. And even though they are threads about a meeting you have to open more threads under each one before you can post.

If you want a big race discussion section that's fine but have that as the section and we'll open big race dicussion threads as we go as Ian had done with good repsonses for some time now.

Personal threads imo where a member is only really interested in doing there own thing and not entering discussions with the group should all be confined to the blog area.

The main thing for me is condense that initial page for gods sake. Recent posts fine display the last half a dozen. But every other section imo should be done as the other sports section and General racing topics are. Threads are hidden until you click on other sports header to view them.

When I come on here, I look at the notifications first. Then I hit New Posts and Latest Activity. Takes me to anything I may not have seen.

But I for one do like to have things organised and in the right place. It appeals to my need for order. Bit like when you don't put a file in the right place on your computer and then you want to send it as an email attachment and you can't find the blasted thing!

I wouldn't know where to look for notifications, New Posts and Latest Activity stuff.

But the rest I totally agree with.

I recall annoying my staff when I put up a notice in the resource room:

A place for everything
and everything in its place

It was in response to the disorder I found myself inheriting and couldn't fathom.

They were miffed at first but later agreed that life was much easier for them when they knew exactly where to find whatever they needed.

Sounds so obvious but that's exactly how it had been.

We have a saying up here: There's nowt so queer as folk.

It's so true.

Notifications are the bell icon on the top right. Any posts you have made or interacted with will notify if there has been a reaction or a reply to it.

New posts are on the top left just under home. Click on that and you can see another line, Latest Activity is to the right hand side.

Sometimes a bit of investigating is worth it.
