Road to the Gold Cup 2011

Desert Orchid was just the same, as the likes of Yahoo, Panto Prince and Pegwell Bay found out. I believe poor old Barnbrook Again found out also, when he once dared to go off in front on the gallops. :)

    Ruby

Suspected broken wrist for Noel Fehily now. McCoy to ride Neptune and Big Buck's tomorrow.

Road to the Gold Cup 2011

According to the Sporting Life, he came back with a little cut to his leg. They're going to monitor it but the intention is to run at Kempton, where he will be ridden handily.

Tactics? I think if IC gets into a good, settled rhythm, he'll win. I suppose Nacarat might try to take him out of his comfort zone? Only way I see him coming unstuck.

    Hennessy

Wasn't Taranis the horse Nicholls mentioned in the RP when he said he fancied one of his for this? I think he said watch out for one carrying 10-4. I'll be seriously impressed if Denman wins this. The gallops is one thing, a race like this another. One of the second season chasers for me, just...

    Ruby

He's (Nicholls) had his fair share of fallers lately. A few at Wincanton the weekend Ruby was injured, with Harry Skelton breaking his collar bone. Yesterday, Tchico Polos, Gwanako and Pistolet Noir all came down.

Road to the Gold Cup 2011

I agree with those who have generally expressed positive thoughts of the first three today. I know some were disappointed with Kauto, and I suppose it's a measure of the horse he's been that they can feel that way with a first time out win in a Grade 1 against the previous season's Arkle winner...

Road to the Gold Cup 2011

I thought it was a pleasing reappearance, all told. Kauto should be sharper for it. I'd still prefer they skip Newbury and go straight to Kempton. Great to see him again, though. Fourteen Grade 1s now. That missing space on his stable door (with the big win plaques) can be filled now. :)

    Hennessy

I'd rather they went for the Racing Post Chase, as I think that would suit Kauto more, but it's highly unlikely given its proximity to Cheltenham. Or, there's the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown. I think Kauto would get the trip, and with better ground and most likely the sun on his back, I could...

Sounds like they're considering taking on Kauto Star at Down Royal. The winner could go there too.

    The Stayer's Hurdle

I don't think connections have ruled it out but the last I read seemed to suggest it would be Aintree and that would be it for the season. Punchestown would only be his fifth race of the season, though, so who knows?

    The Gold Cup 2010

Yup. On account of his first mistake. It knocked him out of his rhythm and he couldn't get back into it. I can't think of another horse around that would have overcome it.

    The Gold Cup 2010

I wouldn't have said this year's field was better than last year's. On the contrary. KS made a bad mistake this time. It happens. I don't think it was because he was struggling. He seemed to be travelling fine before that, as he should have been since they just lobbed around the first circuit...

    Festival Highs and Lows

 There were a few gleeful sorts in my local yesterday evening. The sorts that like to see a champion fail. Is this an English thing? Kauto's fall and the equine fatalities were my sporting lows. Punting low: Most of the meeting, as usual, but especially Rite of Passage. Punting high...

    The Gold Cup 2010

I was impressed with IC yesterday, I underestimated him at his favourite course. That said I agree with those who thought it was a strangely run race. A bit more pace might have helped Kauto's jumping, as he's best when he doesn't have time to think about his obstacles. It was a shocking...

    The Gold Cup 2010

Is Kauto normally one to get warm?

    The Gold Cup 2010

Not so sure about this. Denman really is built to carry weight. He did it very well in the Hennessy but does that mean he will be able to run any faster against a much superior horse to those he faced at Newbury?

    The Gold Cup 2010

I promised myself not to get involved in another Kauto Star v Denman debate, as it's rather like politics and religion: you can only get so far before you go round in circles. But... I think Denman may have been a few pounds below his best last year, though not enough to have altered the...

    The Gold Cup 2010

I expect Kauto Star to win this. As for Haydock, I thoroughly dislike its chase course now, and while KS usually manages to win round there, he hasn't looked like the imperious horse that subsequently shows up at Kempton. I know IC goes well at Cheltenham, but I remain unconvinced about his...

    The Gold Cup 2010

I think we'll see a different Denman next month. But I don't think it will matter, if the freak that lives next door to him turns up.
