Yep, sorry: not sure why I phrased it as I did.

It rather looks as if the Americans have got diddly squat in the 3yo middle-distance male division while Eskendereya is on the sidelines.

If it should apply to form assessments then it should apply to time assessments. They are merely two sides of the same coin. What you are saying is that it should not apply to form assessments. If so, you would expect there to be very clear evidence that the wfa scale in use is wrong. Other...

    The Derby

It'll be interesting to see what the Americans can come up with. Arguably the best of their classic generation that is still in training goes in the Belmont Stakes tonight (11:32 on ATR). Ice Box was second in the Kentucky Derby despite getting stopped in his tracks. Then again, they do not seem...

It just suggests that he could run (a bit) faster. Whether that's faster than a monster timefigure or faster than a sub-monster timefigure seems to depend on your standard times and methods. At the moment I wouldn't want to put a limit on this chap by saying he couldn't run a 130 time in that...

You should always take the time from the sectional to the line and subtract rather than the other way round (assuming sectional and line can be seen readily). There is a significant reaction time - usually 0.3 to 0.5 sec - in getting the stalls opening.

High Chaparral was 73.78% (surprisingly "normal" under the conditions: my thoughts were like yours) A few others for interest: Sea-Bird 74.70% Nijinsky 74.98% Troy 74.77% Shergar 72.41% (he basically ran them into the ground before the straight) Slip Anchor 73.24% Shahrastani 74.54% Nashwan...

Correction: I was forgetting last year's steadily run race which saw Sea The Stars the second-fastest closing sectional behind Galileo. This goes in at number three.

The time of The Derby suggests the going allowance at 1½m does not need to be slower.....well, the time for the winner anyway.....! I have only Galileo's closing sectional faster in this race, though Nijinsky was close.

For what it's worth, Bob Wilkins in his book "Bioenergetics and Racehorse Ratings" has the following to say about seconds-per-furlong (or per mile) adjustments compared to pounds-based adjustments: "...the key result is that for non-standard going, represented by a fixed value of Fg [going...

The sectional %s above were for the leaders and can be used as some sort of indication of the pace of the race (if such a thing can be quantified meaningfully from the leaders alone). The sectional %s of the individual horses are what affects how fast those individual horses are capable of...

Optimum finishing speeds for final 2f at Kempton (where we actually had electronic sectionals for some time) are between 100.1 and 101.8 for races at up to 8f, depending on the distance of the race. While Kempton is flat, it has bends and two separate courses. There is, but it depends on the...

I have the following timefigures: Bushman 94 Tartan Gigha 104 Fame And Glory 117 Fiery Lad 102 Snow Fairy 106 Shakespearean 96 Cansili Star 101 And that final-race time is indeed notably good for the calibre of horse. I would have expected a 97 maximum. The individual sectionals of Derby...

It probably was truly run, judged on those figures, though a single sectional can sometimes hide what more than one sectional would reveal and a few assumptions have had to be made. Estimating the sectional as 3.2f (it may have been slightly less) and using the times that can be derived from...
