    The People's Award

At least Farrelly will get a licence when he wants one

    The People's Award

Yes indeed - well done Kevin Bishop, who has allowed someone else to train the horse in his name. The Bishop "revival" has been one of the interesting stories of the season, but I suspect when Johnny Farrelly gets a licence in his own right, that particular Indian summer will be over.

Probably, but not to provide finance for the new venture, we're told.

    Cheltenham Racecourse Redevelopment

I did have a chat with Rebecca Davies afterwards about the possibility of using astroturf (all the rage in gardening circles at the moment, apparently) along with/instead of grass in some areas. There is a section of the parade ring which already uses the surface, and while you wouldn't want the...

    Cheltenham Racecourse Redevelopment

One notable error in there is the capacity of the new stand - there will be capacity for an extra 6,500 customers compared to the current facility, although I'd imagine the official capacity of the A&R stand wouldn't be huge as it stands.

I did suggest tarmacing the entire area, Harry, but the executive didn't look too keen.

    Cheltenham Racecourse Redevelopment

No fixtures to move. Start date of April 2014, with works projected to take 22 months, in time for 2016 Festival. The 2015 event would see some disruption, therefore, but no specific plans to limit crowds (I'd imagine some reduction in numbers would be necessary).

    Cheltenham Racecourse Redevelopment

An interesting presentation today, and the plans certainly look to fulfil a brief of "keeping the horse at the centre of everything we do". The customer experience will certainly be enhanced, in terms of paddock views as much as anything, unless you happen to be an A&R boxholder!

Sprinter Sacre: should he run at further distances?

I went a few years between the first lawsuit (admittedly one claiming upwards of £30m) and the last couple, Tanlic. I think I should rest on my laurels for a bit.

Sprinter Sacre: should he run at further distances?

I'm not sure there was anything in Flemenstar's illness at all, but his much publicised aversion to travelling is the likelier cause of a flop on his part, for all connections have recently stated that they don't consider it an issue any more.

    What are you backing Today?

I thought that, while he's a much likelier contender for a place than a win, Gunner Lindley looks a knocking each-way bet in the Irish Lincolnshire. He has a great record in the mud, goes well fresh, handles the track, and hails from an underrated and in-form yard. What's not to like?

Sprinter Sacre: should he run at further distances?

I'm not sure that's strictly true. It's true that the win meant more, and the fact that he appeared to be going over the top means he had to show more mettle to win it, so if that's what defines "best" then maybe so.

Sprinter Sacre: should he run at further distances?

That's my point, though. If, like Mr and Mrs Mould, you are happy to pour millions into your hobby with no other aim than to win the top races (rather than maximise profit), it seems a terrible shame to avoid Cue Card, who is a cracking horse, but not in the same bracket as Sprinter Sacre. It...

Sprinter Sacre: should he run at further distances?

There's no real doubt that Sprinter Sacre would prove at least as good at 2m4f, is there? I certainly don't doubt that he would achieve bigger performances at that trip and beyond, if only because of the quality of horses he'd be thrashing. He's chased away everything at 2m, and the Arkle was a...

Sprinter Sacre: should he run at further distances?

Breathing op is the key, I feel. I'm told he's had 3 such operations, and it's felt (in some quarters at least) that he'll succumb to his wind at some point. That's pretty much the only reason not to aim him at a Gold Cup. Owning horses is a losing business (unless you're Noel Hayes and co), and...
