    Can anyone guess

Education, or lack of, seems to be the topic of the moment and when I hear those spouting about how education should be, I remember stories told by my older folks ..... My Grandad was born in 1915 and school was mandatory from the age of 5, I believe. Bill (my Grandad) was never one for doing...

    Can anyone guess

Thats, reminded me of another story he told. My Grandad was a travelling salesman from 1945 onwards and very quickly saw an opportunity to set up a 'Footballs pool' type business. He set up a small concern but got a take-over offer from a growing competitior - Littlewoods. The offer was not...

    Can anyone guess

If it is the checking of pools coupons. It reminded me of a story my Grandad told me. He did his '8 from 10' every week and listened to the results on the radio. One Saturday, he got his eight score draws and rushed down to the central post office in Barnsley to make his claim. To put in...

    Plenty on here won't agree

All about motive really - having given all the best brains with the best labs in the world 50 years to make them run faster and failed and then Barney C. shows them it can be done in two provided the money is down. MR2

    Death Row.......Last meal?

I remember watching a TV programme and the issue of 'last meal' was discussed. If I remember correctly 'MacDonalds' burger was a common request at which point the wit on the panel asked why has it become known as a 'happy meal' MR2

    Ken, Dave, or Rolf

Whilst the following may rile, I need to say it anyway. WHAT WERE THE PARENTS OF THESE CHILDREN DOING? I would like to see charges brought against them for 'neglect.' Chatting to my family over Christmas, who were 'of that era', led into a discussion about how they had friends and...

    Lone Working in betting shops

Colin, that was a tragic story but could not but grimace further with the advert inserted within the article about '1000 free spins.' Feeling for his friends and family - MR2

    Foiled betting plot

Thanks, Rory. Without wishing to put you to any trouble. The 'busted plot' with some serious complications involving racecourse securities happened when I was 19/20/21 so that would put the event at 1979 to 1982. Was there another Castle Pride? The syndicate owned a number of horses...

    Foiled betting plot

Around 1979-1982 I was part owner of 'Castle Pride' and unfortunately victim of a 'busted' plot. Over our Christmas table the event resurrected itself. My memory was that CPs 'busted plot' run at Perth was its first or second run. But my Dad reckons it had previously run and won 6 times. I...

So, presuming AP gets to the '4000' today, tomorrow sees him at Musselborough, Hexham and Southwell. That man is a hero. MR2

    'Somme' thing for Badgers

Before I start, TB has run within my family so I know a little bit about it but .... Just read on the BBC that the shooting cull is falling behind so the authorities have a plan to use GASS. Maybe my sick humour but is it not just a few weeks ago that we were on the verge of war over the use...

    Good Friday racing

I see the 'Powers that be' are looking for meeting applications. My sense of humour gives way to what potential sponsors the Good Friday races might come for forward e.g. The 'Ainsworth Nails for that special occasion' handicap chase. I'm sure others might have better ideas. MR2
