I really don't fancy Hermes Allen at all in the Scilly Isles today, and think this is a great opportunity to oppose an odds-on shot. I think he's both a stayer and a mudlark, and figure his price is more a reflection of him being the only horse to finish in the same parish as Il Est Francais...

I keep getting drawn back to the outer of the party, Dancing City. I think he really wants this longer trip of 2m6f, and for all that he has three stablemates shorter in the betting, 20/1 is a tempting price.

Stakes should never really have to increase beyond the comfort-zone, barjon. Everyone has their ceiling and everyone’s is different, I dare say. In the model above, it’s even more important for a rookie. At the very least, it teaches discipline, which is a valuable commodity in a variety of ways...

A rookie should start with small stakes (regardless of means) and set a target bank with a time limit. The target could be anything - even a small % loss on stakes. Up the stakes if the target is hit, and adjust the target bank in line with it. Rinse and repeat. If you start making a profit...

Latch onto someone who knows the game, and bleed them for information. Leverage their experience, and treat every discussion as a school-day. Ask searching questions as to why they like a particular horse in a given race. Unless you have an incredibly rare knack for assimilating form study...

I am currently concocting a conspiracy theory in my noggin that they might be trying to get him handicapped for the Plate or Grand Annual. Isn't in the betting for either race at present (as far as I can see), but will keep an eye on that.

Note of caution, Nick......IET not jocked-up and big drifter today (out to 20/1 with Coral). Might be because Mullins has talked-up Facile Vega and Townend rides, but might be he won't go. He's still in the 2m5f race Sunday, but is 66's for that. I reckon he'll probably miss the meeting, tbh.

I backed Il Etait Temps ew when betting opened (had also backed him for the Sunday race). He is my cliff-horse though, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.
