The 2025 Bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase

If Victtorino runs like nearly all of Venetia's horses recently it will disappear out of the back of the screen and lose a few pounds off its handicap rating ready for a return to Ascot in the autumn. It's worth a small bet and she has quite a few running at Bangor this evening which may do a...

    Trainers you cannot predict

I've backed countless horses trained by Sir Mark Prescott in races like the Northumberland Plate, Ebor and Cesarewitch, and have failed to win with any of them. Needless to say I missed Pledgeofallegiance which won last year's Ascot Stakes at 20/1 and hasn't raced since. He's very good at...

The 2025 Irish Grand National (Extended Handicap Chase)

Gavin Cromwell said that Final Orders wouldn't want the ground to get too soft. There's a lengthy and informative piece headed " Connections talk about Irish National contenders " on Irishracing.com on April 17th. One that will like it is Now Is The Hour ( 6/1) who handled the heavy...

Does anyone follow this kind of thing?

This was one of the Talking Points on Racing TV's Luck on Sunday three days ago. It's on Racing TV's YouTube channel with around three minutes of discussion between Nick Luck and Ralph Beckett starting at 15:56. I had a look at some of the horses owned by Amphitheatre Racing ( AR ) and most of...

To water or not to water

They would probably want the going to be a bit easier than officially ' good ', but the weather over the last month has been against them. Hardly any rain after the Festival five weeks ago, and the maximum temperatures for Cheltenham from 1 April to 15 April have ranged from 15 to 22 degrees (...

    Here's another maestro

Dudley Moore used to play the church organ at weddings when he was aged around 14, and would extemporise themes from nursery rhymes into the music from time to time.

    I don't get it

They're not waiting for handicaps as Brookie holds an entry for the two miles Grade 1 novice chase at Punchestown. Anthony Honeyball's ATR Stable Tour on 18 December 2024 included the quote " We are poaching for prize money and he might just pick up some there." That was ahead of the Wayward Lad...

The 2025 Scottish Grand National (Handicap Chase)

Spanish Harlem was taken out by a horse pulling up on his inside just like See More Business (?) in the Cheltenham Gold Cup many years ago. Something went wrong with last year's winner, Macdermott, who was pulled up and then had screens around him a circuit later. Lots of security people on the...

The 2025 Scottish Grand National (Handicap Chase)

Thanks. Didn't know about that as I don't follow all the stuff between races and usually watch RTV rather than ITV. One of my two main contacts for chats about horse racing has Parkinson's dementia and the other one died last autumn. They are one of the reasons I joined this forum late last year.

And also Klarc Kent ( 8th in the same race as Rock My Way ). ( Un De Sceaux was owned by the father of Klarc Kent's owner, Colm O'Connell.) Will be worth watching all the prelims just to see if everyone is kitted out in blue, white and yellow scarves.

The 2025 Scottish Grand National (Handicap Chase)

13 winners of the Scottish Grand National in the last 42 years were beaten at the Cheltenham Festival the previous month finishing 837P5875PP235. Irishracing.com/news writes up the chances of three horses which ran at Cheltenham in March. (1) Hasthing - the O'Neills - (16/1) - fell at the last...

Horses you never forgave and couldn’t like

On Saturday 3 April 1971 I was on a train to Egham, sitting opposite an old man in a Chelsea pensioner's uniform. Eventually I asked him about his uniform, which is what you have to do when faced by a Chelsea pensioner. He looked very pleased to have been asked, ignored my question, and came up...

The 2025 Scottish Grand National (Handicap Chase)

By my reckoning Willie Mullins still has 11 horses of the 33 remaining in the Scottish Grand National at the five-day entry stage. The maximum field size is 30 so nearly all those wishing to run will do so. It won't be a race for mudlarks unless the ground is like the good to soft at Uttoxeter...

    The 2025 Grand National

I should really have stuck to my guns and included Nick Rockett instead of Perceval Legallois in the One Only for the National competition, but with a few minutes to go I stuck £1e/w on Nick Rockett and Grangeclare West. I was pleased they didn't finish first and second as I didn't think of...
