The goods and the bads from this week

Except when Laura Wright was screeching the Final Countdown in the winner’s enclosure when the runners for the Triumph were entering the paddock !

    The Triumph Hurdle

I thought STD did not shine on East India Dock - he gave him a sort of halfway house ride allowing him to be sucker punched - not sure at all James Owen made the right decision when making STD rather than Cobden his first choice jockey .

    Cheltenham Gold Cup

I wouldn’t rule out Lecky Watson - chasing has been the making of him . Rewatching the Broadway Chase - has Ballyburn always had such a low head carriage ?

    Cheltenham Gold Cup

It’s an old argument but it was soft at Cheltenham in 2004 and the official ground description was rubbish - it rained all day and I think Paul Carberry was right when quoted - Best Mate would have won ten lengths yesterday the rain gave us all a chance . Banbridge was frustrating everything...

    TV coverage

There are a lot of very posh people with apparently very little talent in racing broadcasting - how Rupert Bell and Aly Vance ( whose omnipresence on the microphone was one of the downers of this Festival beats me ?

    Cheltenham Gold Cup

I admire GDC - he’s a gorgeous looking animal but I do think a better horse with cut . You cannot blame the horse for the hype . It’s hardly his fault Ruby Walsh and others started this best Irish horse since Arkle stuff ( which was bollocks none of his wins come close to Captain Christy in the...

    2025 Ultima Handicap Chase

Catching up watching replays - might The Short Go be one for the Irish National. ?

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

It’s been a fabulous week’s racing - if that doesn’t get people to come back to Cheltenham not sure any meal deals or screeching sopranos murdering the Final Countdown will .

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Legend of a horse - just annoyed I did not take the 33-1 with PP on Monday . It was a wonderful race to watch.

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Wodhooh must be a contender for the Mares next year - still unbeaten . I have had four days with one leg buggering up the place pot The culprits Constitution Hill Ballyburn Jubilee Alpha ( why was she not Sixandahalf in it ? ) Angels Dawn Ended a bit up largely thanks to...

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Monty’s Star did well to stay in there after that juddering mistake .

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Where were the British stayers ? Never be afraid of one horse . GDC never looked entirely happy and the less positive tactics were a surprise . The winner appeared to love the ground and left GDC for dead.

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

JDV better today though - I now see Daryl Jacob had been telling everyone in a preview his jumping was much sharpened up - Argento Bay jumped appallingly badly once he made a mistake . Not quite sure Rachael would have had The Big Westerner in that position right on the rail after the second...

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Rather baffled by the ride given to Wendigo and The Big Westerner looked a bit unlucky but JDV saw her off well from the last . Love Derryhassen Paddy he looks like a proper chaser for next year.

    2025 County (Handicap) Hurdle

Depressing only five GB runners - wonder whether allowing novices that win one of the big handicap hurdles an exemption might help . Also in recent years I have thought they should consider stopping the Newbury and Sandown weekends - 13 days recovery from the Imperial Cup would be more feasible.

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Kargese was in front a bit early for my liking but clearly a Graded horse in a handicap especially after her Ascot conqueror was third in the mares - I suspect had she run there she’d have been second to Lossiemouth.

    2025 County (Handicap) Hurdle

Can see why Absurde will never match his Flat form over hurdles good as he is - put the brakes on approaching the last possibly cost second

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

This week has been mad - what next Ahoy Senor running down GDC close home ???

    The Cheltenham Festival 2025

Poniros - never run before. It was an expensive purchase . Jonjo must have been about tenth choice jockey ! Most remarkable debutante winner since Lady Capulet ?
