    Departures 2009

That is sad news, commiserations to the Candy yard and Thurloe Thoroughbreds. He was pretty lightly raced, must have been quite a fragile horse but talented, 4 wins and 2 seconds from only 10 runs at 4.

    Eight race cards

Difference is that most flat racing with 8 races takes place in high summer (and yes I do know there are 3 a/w tracks which race in 'all weathers'- it's chatting to security at GLs last winter which brought it home to me how they suffer!)

    Harchibald

My own comment was a bit tongue in cheek - for all we know he may have enjoyed schooling so much they wish they'd done it before! He's always been a law unto himself and no doubt still is... and no, they surely won't risk him if he's not enjoying it on track. They wouldn't would they? :^0 I'm...

    Harchibald

Shocking, and I'm not over the moon to see War Of Attrition out again tomorrow at Gowran, either. Let's hope Harchi decides it's a mugs game - I'd larf if he pulled himself up

    Eight race cards

Bumpers are I imagine always last because of the problem of poor visibility - not just fading light but low sun, making jumping very dangerous. I agree that 8-race NH cards are a thoroughly bad idea, not least for eg security staff who would have to stand in one spot outside for an unhealthily...

    Rest of Arc weekend

Advice to members is that we should be happy with 3rd or 4th, Charlton not really expecting better than that. His hand a bit forced to run him here as very little for him and he does need a bit of cut to show his best. He will def run so far as the ground is safe - big club contingent going...

    Lingfield

Agreed - go for soft-ground horses right now! I've done quite well today there so it's not impossible to get winners

Middle Park & Cheveley Park Stakes Group 1

Yes and the first time I haven't back him, typical! My [recently installed] wifi has been crashing all day as I try to send pictue files off

    2009 Arc.

The size of the field really worries me. I only hope that a large number of no-hopers don't spoil it for one or more of the principals, esp STS. He will be the one they are all out to 'get', and jockeyship will be all-important. Luckily Kinane is one of the more astute tactically as he will need...

Nicky Vaughan sacked by Michael Owen

Most are going up I believe. Some have stayed down while owners make their minds up. Those owners who def want to stay local have gone to other yards already - 2 or 3 to Al Lidderdale's the best of which is Gross Prophet, dec to run at Goodwood on Wednesday, Dwyer riding. He's been there a few...

    Fri 18th / Sat 19th Sept

I've just started betting again in the last 10 days after a longish break (no wifi and no time!). Had a fair few winners - inc Awzaan, a lovely horse - but even more 2nds which have been quite painful... I'd have made all those losses back however, if only Kieren hadn't nabbed Total Gallery on...

    New initiatives

On the matter of big G1 Saturday meetings - and I go to a lot as I'm sure many on here do - there's no denying they provide a great buzz. But! - the crowds providing the buzz often make it uncomfortable for proper racing fans like ourselves - they get pissed, they get in the way, they block the...

    New initiatives

I love Champions Day at Newmarket - it's one of the highlights of the year for me; but I do think it's very close to the Cambridgeshire meeting. I don't see what can be done about it being so close to the Arc meeting; and it can't be brought forward due to the Cambridgeshire w/e, and also the...

    Major Cadeaux?

Horses which are taken away from the Hannon yard to run elsewhere (cf Fat Boy and others) rarely if ever even keep their form let alone improve! If a horse starts to put in poor runs at the Hannons there is always a reason, I'd say some physical problem.

    Demise

Totally agree aobut Cesare, he's earned a good retirement. James is not usually one to keep a horse going too long... owners' choice? Cheveley aren t; villains but he is a gleding... His record in the last year is still OK on Gd/Soft and if he were mine I'd keep him to that and race him less...

    Mad Manners passes away

Definitely added to the gaiety of nations - a big loss. I read a good piece about him in one of the dailies a couple a couple of years ago, when Man Of Highworth was fancied at the Festival for the Foxhunters, which made we want to meet him - here it is...

    Tweenhills Stud

They lost Ishiuru only a few days ago (or maybe a week or so, can't quite remember) - a big blow for them

    Niel, Foy and Vermeille

I don't remember that tbh, I was no doubt abroad! But I've been told some dark tales by trainers who had some very rum experiences with the French stewards, inc one who was shown a 'photo finish' - half an hour after the race which he swears he won by a clear margin - in which there was no...

    Soumillion loses Aga Khan retainer

Me neither, I find him utterly loathsome; and if Spoons and others (inc Fabre!) are right about his whipping excesses, and I'm sure they are, then I abhor him professionally as well as personally. I can't see how anyone can put Frankie in that bracket though - his ebullience is good natured...

    Niel, Foy and Vermeille

Latest is that the Lloyd Webbers are going to contest the decision 'very strongly' and I damn well hope they get a result. French Stewards are shameless - this happens at small French meetings (inc jumps) even more than at the big ones; they will throw out a foreign horse - esp UK trained - on...
