I guess one of them must have been Kadastral who is highly thought of, who was on his hurdle debut and facing a red hot favourite who was a steamer and who won as easy as you like. True Harry Skelton didn’t knock him about, but if you expect such a horse in such circumstances to be put under...

Agree. I use “What’s new” primarily to navigate the site. That gives me “Latest posts” which is what I’m looking for and also “Latest profile posts” which seem a bit of a waste of space to me, certainly I never look at them.

2:30 Chepstow: Matty's Getaway, cost a bit after winning an Irish point and showed a lot of promise on his rules debut - 10/10 raced mid division and was badly hampered three out, it was a strong effort to recover and run into third. He’s well thought of, as are several others in this and it...

Similar from Gerard Mentor. He ran a decent enough race, but lost momentum at the last when challenging. Cost him second, maybe, but he wouldn’t have got near the winner. He won’t do better. Nothing today,

Point Blank: AK Bets Was Always a Prick

Nice one, slim, but it’s a very narrow and somewhat iffy description of the common man. I’m off to Newbury this week and it’ll be full of common people who are there because they enjoy seeing horses and watching them race. - many of them won’t even have a bet. And it’ll be full of common people...

Inis Oirr was a waste of space, but Pure Carbon more than made up for it, hanging on to win nicely. Shortened to evens from 5/2, but I didn’t add because I was so busy with the shed. It’s up now and we’re back home. 4:20 Hereford: Gerard Mentor ran a good race last time -18/10 looked as though...

Military Alliance was very nice, worked at it to win whilst Soomaroy wasn’t knocked about trying to. Should they meet again I wouldn’t anticipate the same result. Martator was withdrawn due to a bruised foot and Special Cadeau wasn’t up to it. Couple of notebooks today: 2:55 Huntingdon - I...

Eremenco was a non-runner and nothing to get excited about with the other two, although their jumping was passable. Bugger me, there’s some cracking racing today, but I’m still away and will be busy helping to erect a shed for my son. No notebooks and a cursory glance at the cards leads me to...

Nothing new but I just need to say it

By a similar token, desert, I think handicappers sometimes over-rate the top races because they take account of the historic rating average for the race in question. That means that you occasionally see a lower class horse that has chanced its arm in the big race earning a rating that it never...

Each to their own, Danny. What matters more is a + sign in the profit and loss column.

Nothing new but I just need to say it

Early in my career I worked in an office above Berwick Street market in Soho. I went to get a haircut as Alex was getting out of the chair. We chatted for a bit and the barber couldn’t wait to get me in the chair. “Do you know Alex Bird? Got a tip?”. I didn’t, but the Lincoln was coming up...

Nothing new but I just need to say it

Alex Bird (sure you will recall him, Ian) was a friend of my father and when he saw I was interested in racing he wagged his finger and said “Don’t bet handicaps”. He never did except in the Grand National because in those days you could eliminate most of the field because they wouldn’t get...

Articles the Racing Post put behind a paywall that you'd want paying to read....

I think the obsession with Cheltenham is really unhealthy for racing. It shows no sign of lessening, more’s the pity. Maybe they and the local hoteliers will price themselves out of the game in competition with other festivals. I reckon if I come back to life in twenty years time I’d find the...

Kayf Dancer was disappointing last Wednesday and there didn’t seem to be any good reason. Away at the moment and missed out yesterday on Be Aware who jumped well and won on his chase debut. He tracked the leader, Grandeur Dame, for most of the race and that one was still in the lead when...

No notebooks, but Kayf Dancer - 2:53:Newton Abbott- ran The New Lion to seven lengths a year ago and then followed that with a facile 1/14 win at Exeter in March. Not sure why he only ran the twice, but if he’s ok he should be bang there today. Won’t be about for a couple of days.
