ITV News are running a breaking news story about a robbery from Securitas in Kent of cash "in excess of £40million". The gang posed as Police, stopped & kidnapped a manager in a patrol car, then kidnapped his family & threatened to harm them if their demands were not met. The gang have not been caught yet apparently. I can't find anything on any websites yet so don't have more info, but the first thing I thought was bloody hell! That's some heist, surely £40mil in notes would be pretty hard to launder?

Obviously an inside job.

Why go to all the bother of robbing £40m when they can make that by following one of the wonderful tipsters we've all had literature from recently?

Dear Bank Robbers:

Congratulations, and well done! If you need a safe spot to bunk, a caring old lady to look after your dosh while you leg it temporarily to Rio, etc., my name is Jon and I live in Brighton. No police record, non-smoker, and willing to provide this service for only £100 per day, VAT inc. PM above. Thank you!

Yeah, I saw the BBC report later that said £25mil. ITV kept saying at 6pm that they had it 'confirmed by their sources that the amount was in excess of £40mil'!

It was obviously the IRA what done it. What other organisation has the capacity, the military precision, the logistical know-how and manpower. Or does that not apply any more now that the peace process has broken down.

You're still not convinced about the Northern Bank job, are you? Even after the arrest of an IRA member with £2.3m, some of which was positively identified as coming from the bank.

I believe that IRA members did the Northern Bank job, but am prepared to be convinced otherwise. I have yet to see compelling evidence either way. I would be totally unsurprised if it was an IRA operation.

What I object to is Hugh Orde's definitive statement that they did it. And with Sinn Fein negotiators' knowledge. It seems to transpire this was based solely on the understanding that PSNI didn't believe an outfit existed with sufficient manpower and other resources to pull off the raid besides a full scale authorised IRA operation. The current heist appears to be an almost exact replica of the Northern Bank heist yet it appears to be attributed to a "London gang" (when last I heard). Are they saying that a "London gang" has the resources to operate in Kent but can't afford the boat tickets to get to the North.

That the same people who have conducted money laundering operations for the IRA have become involved is no great surprise regardless of who carried out the heist. Bank notes have also been found in the hands of non republicans. These have been dismissed as not being related to the Northern Bank raid - could it be this is because the people caught with the money are not republicans?

I think that the unspoken point from the police about the Northern Bank job was that no one other than a branch of the IRA or one of the other side's gangs with initials would have dared to commit such a crime inthe North of Ireland, upon pain of death (literally). So it was then just the use of intelligence to find out which.

There was a chap on Radio 2 a while ago saying that whoever responsible will have a huge headache trying to figure out where to hide such a vast amount of cash because other villains will try to steal it. I'm willing to share some of the burden with Krizon, if they'd like to borrow my garage they're more than welcome :D And I'm within easy reach of Cheltenham should they wish to 'invest' some of the money at the Festival

I've been trying to work out how much room is needed to store 40 million in used notes ?
I have got together what cash I have ( no 50's only 20's & 10's ) and measured my wad

£500 in a mix of 20's & 10's measures near enough 1/8 th of an inch ( no metric rule )
so 40 million would create a column 833 ft high.
The notes are approx 3" x 6" so the volume would be 180,000 cu ins or 3.85 cu yds

What else is there to do on a miserable day ?

A 7.5 tonne is about:-

5.90m x 2.4 m x 2.2m....so about 31m3. Yep, I have just that amount of space spare in my warehouse right now if they are looking for some cheap storage!

According to the chap on the radio, 40 millions worth of fifty pound notes, stacked on top of each other would be 36 storeys high

I thought they used a lorry Brian ?

No matter what they used they wouldn't know what the actual volume was unless of course it was an inside job.

They would have just known that there as "lots"! Of course, the volume will not be the same when it's all bundled into sacks. It's a bit like the difference between drawing out of a cash machine and picking up a poker pot at four o'clock in the morning... :D
