Tuned into the Aintree bumper to see how Bombay Sapphire would go (disappointing), but quite impressed with the strong finish from way back of Ruby Island. Worth keeping an eye on, I think.

I was particularly interested to see how New Found Flame went - 2:55 Ffos Las. Never put in the race as far as I could see and pulled up in the end which is ominous - they could never have intended that. Once again, looking at one that disappointed, but taken with another. The winner Spring Meadow was strong in the finish and I’ll keep an eye on him for a while.

Star of those I watched has to be Ilovethenightlife - 1:45 Ffos Las - who, despite being all over the place at many of the hurdles, showed an impressive turn of foot to win going away under the most minimal of hands and heels to win by 7 lengths. Maybe something quite good.

Regarding the Bombay Sapphire race, I thought Clara Rose was one to keep an eye on. Quite happy to lob along in last, when the jockey asked in the last 2f, the horse began to pick up but was a little squeezed at this vital time and he could get no nearer.

I'm not sure he was fully wound up for this but is one to watch imo, BAP.

Just looked at the race again. CR certainly looked comfortable, but I think she was just out for the experience. See how she goes when it gets a bit more serious.

a post-race quote from a knowledgeable race-watcher re Ruby Island....

"as with many of her yard’s horses at present she looked in need of the run and not great in her coat, which has yet to be clipped out. To run so well under a penalty bodes well for her career over jumps, which she has the size for."

Yup. It looked like a 'learning' race him, to make sure he can settle and travel, which I thought he did.
