Amateur jockey Billy Coonan was handed a 20-day non-trier ban for his ride on fifth-placed Read To Return in the 3m1f amateur handicap chase at Cheltenham on Saturday.

The Handicapper should put the horse up a mandatory 14LB for a convicted non-trier...that would stop the thieving bar stewards...

I watched the race a few minutes ago.

Had I backed it, I wouldn't have had too many issues through the first circuit. In rear but not out of touch and going well. However, no effort was made to improve his position through the second circuit and, in fact, he went from 12 lengths down four out to nearly 20 lengths three out and only then started shaking the horse up. He must have pretty much flown up the hill (out of camera shot) to get so close.

Cheltenham was never lucky for the Coonan family.
Billy's grandfather Bobby, eight time Irish Champion NH jockey rode only one Festival winner there and fell with Glencarraig Lady , not once , but twice.
In 1970 RSA chase she was upsides Proud Tarquin at the second last or last when falling , the race at her mercy. ( It was suggested Pat Taaffe riding Proud Tarquin had Bobby engaged in conversation and Bobby's concentration was broken).
In 1971 Gold Cup the mare was in front three out with the race at her mercy when falling, though Tommy Carberry thought otherwise on L'Escargot.
