May not seem the right thing to post this deep in the twig hopping season but first entries were published this week. No surprises that Coolmore have a whopping 77 entries or that Godolphin has 53, but Hamdan's 46 is a big number for him.
The usual suspects are there in the form of Juddmonte (16: quality over quantity with a full-brother to Frankel and Noble Mission) and the Aga Khan (15).
My eye was drawn to there being 4 Royal entries. The Queen doesn't usually enter many for this race because they are not good enough. Her last entry was Carlton House and she didn't breed that one. I can't remember the last time she entered one of her yearlings: maybe Free Agent for the 2009 race. You'd expect the colts she has entered to be down to be with Stoute but Haggas has two of the 4 in the shape of Mainstream (Dansili -Golden Stream) and Recorder (Galileo-Memory). Is this the start of a shift to Haggas as the man for the future?
Of course entering a colt at this stage for the Derby doesn't say a lot more than that the horse has 4 legs and looks as if he could run. But it's a departure for the Royal team.
