2025 Grimthorpe Handicap Chase

Aftertiming alert - Some Scope pretty much made my Boxing Day on the betting front when winning the Rowland Meyrick.

That won't interest you one bit, but what might is that I am reliably informed the trainer ran him at Cheltenham next time out under protest but had to cave as one of the owners loves his Cheltenham Saturday runners and insisted.

The trip was all wrong, he's a stayer and he was sensibly pulled up once beaten.

This is much more up his street and he's only up 3lb for Wetherby, where he seemed Hell bent on making me graft for my money by idling like a big idly thing.

11/2 best with Bet365, the promising Charlie Maggs is reunited with him and if he's declared on Thursday what beats him wins it in my book.

Yes, I was on that day at Wetherby and thought it had the race won a long way out.

I haven't looked at the race yet so won't proffer an opinion for now.

Looks like 13 declared, including Some Scope.

I would appear to have ante-post money on a declared runner - let joy be unconfined.

I might have a biscuit with my morning coffee by way of celebration.

I will post a betting link when I see one.

White Rhino all day long for me.

I like the fact connections swerve the Cheltenham Festival graded races in favour of this, and who knows, if he wins well, perhaps a race at Aintree might be on the agenda.

Au contraire, Some Scope all day long (and my day is just that bit longer than The Fortune Teller's, with both a slightly-earlier dawn and slightly-later dusk) for (pretentious?) moi. 😂

Some Scope won the Rowland Meyrick with any amount in hand and can erase the memory of that Cheltenham owners' jolly day out 2m4f debacle over a course and distance that will suit this progressive young beast admirably.

If Caughty is off today and this isn't just a run around for the Kim Muir, there's a fair chance plenty of the field will have some nice views of his rear end for much of the race.

Kim Muir odds will likely tumble if there's a good run and that's the target. But it's only 12 days away (has an entry in the Challenge Cup, too, but that's worse - only 10 days, just can't see that).

Second-guessing NTD's intentions isn't easy here. But logically, unless it is a 'needed' soft run today, this has to be the target?, with Aintree to follow, and bigger races in the autumn/next year.

The problem? Connections will likely have been dreaming of a Cheltenham win for a good few years. At 8, they logically have this year and next. Unless they're still harbouring thoughts of a Gold Cup run (as a 9YO), then this year seems most likely. Perhaps he's robust enough to take two hard races 12 days apart? But that doesn't look anywhere near ideal.

It was odd (maybe) to see that switch to Christian Williams for a few races then back to NTD. But maybe there's some relationship there? Change of scenery ploy to get the horse back on track? Maybe to CW to see if he could find out what was wrong.

It would be great to see another chaser in the Imperial Commander mold running big races for NTD. Caught hasn't properly shown it yet, glimpses of maybe, maybe. There appears to still be just about enough time.

thanks for that, Maurice.

I've twisted my brain looking for the winner of this and have, for my sins, sided with an ew on Surrey Quest.
Good luck with that one. I've had a feeling they've been planning a return to the Scottish National after failing narrowly at a big price in the race last year. Looks a thorough stayer and reminded me of Just So, 2nd to Miinnehoma in the GN.
I was going to do Some Scope with King Turgeon ( non-runner, pricked foot ), and have boringly picked the two Twiston-Davies shorties with Some Scope in very small e/w bets along with 50p combination forecasts.
