A Day For Watching

Some good racing today, but a lot of my notebook horses find themselves in opposition so I should really watch - expect I’ll be tempted, though. I’ll concentrate on the take outs from Royal Ascot.

Aviation Time - 1:50 Ascot - can’t really understand why this one is 14/1. She was in my notebook because of an unlucky run at Beverley and ran a decent race into third in the Windsor Castle (Listed). This is a Group 3, but it’s a furlong longer which will suit.

Doom - 2:25 Ascot - Before she saw the track Doom was being touted as a superstar in the making. She has never lived up to that and although she has won a couple of races her main claim to fame is being beaten at Ripon when 25/1 ON. The Duke of Cambridge was her first time dining at the Group table and it was a pretty good run into third, albeit no challenge to the Gosden duo. Arguably it was her best performance (but beware the “Royal Ascot” bias in the ratings) so it will be interesting to see how she gets on today. Soprano is also in this race, she made a good run into third last time on unsuitable ground. She’ll be much more comfortable today.

Carrytheone - 3:00 Ascot - came from well off the pace in the Buckingham Palace and looking for a run from two furlongs out. Didn’t get it until half a furlong left and then finished like an express train, but too late.

King’s Gambit - 3:15 York - 2nd in the Hampton Court and everyone and their mother’s uncle will have had this one going into their notebook. The trainer summed it up:

It looked like a disaster from furlong one - we were in the worst possible position on this round course, and King's Gambit has run monstrously well to get anywhere near them. You can see how good he is, and we'll enjoy him down the line - Harry Charlton, trainer.

This is a very tough race, of course, and he will have his work cut out to challenge.
