Heard this on the Radio today...... a true story.

Scene . A Restaurant somewhere in U.K

A german visitor asked a waiter
' Can you tell me vat the soup of the day is'?

A voice called from the next table. 'Don't tell him Pike'!

I roared when I heard this. It was on the Ken Bruce show, which I think is a damn good show to listen to.Plenty of good music, comps and fun.

Ken Bruce has been asking for people to send in stories of overheard conversations, in pups, cafes etc. Most of the funniest stories have involved older people. Another one that was heard involves two old ladies shopping in Sainsbury's and they were discussing as to where the orgasmic section could be!

And 'Pike' was one of the characters in 'Dad's Army' - Captain Mainwaring was always bossing him about to do this and do that, or not, so it would've been his immediate response in the situation.

Ee, it spoils it in translation, doesn't it?

The crew of a U-boat are found adrift in a dinghy. They're captured and brought to the church hall, where Mainwaring and his men are given the task of guarding them until an armed escort arrives.

However the u-boat commander asks private Pike his name to which Captain Mainwaring says the immortal line don't tell him Pike

May I recommend "The Thick Of It", one of the funniest programmes seen on television for quite a while. I defy anyone to watch any episode without laughing out loud.

Sadly, those who say they never to watch the BBC will have to forego the pleasure - though as I doubt whether their claim is 100% correct I exopect they'll join the rest of us in enjoying this latest effort from the brilliant writer/director Armando Iannucci.

Okay, though I can't say I found the trailers apparently hilarious or original-looking, Brian. I read a review which implied it was not so much peppered with the 'F' word as desperately overseasoned. I don't mind swearing, but not when it's the swearing itself which is meant to be funny, over and over again, for f*ck's sake!

I think that at least you should do it the favour of watching it - you will, I have no doubt, find it very funny. I think I'd even put it in front of "The Office".

Berlimey, Brian - THAT good? :what: I'll give it a shot, but as someone who finds Spongebob Squarepants hilarious, bitingly satirical wit may be too exhausting for me in my dotage.
