Advice of photo editing software

I've lost my product key for photoshop elements 6 so I can't install it on my new pc so it means I have to buy a new one

Is there anything else apart from elements that is any good?

I've got a Nikon & picture project that came with it isn't compatible with vista

Any thoughts?
