Right - I will admit I am not the most music minded on here but I was rather amazed at Christmas when my twin 11yo niece & nephew having received CD walkmans had no CDs to listen to. Nor had they any particular interest in current music. As their father, my brother, was similarly out of touch at the same age (he liked Diana Ross & The Wurzels!), I feel now they are approaching their 12th birthday, it is my Auntly duty/job to steer them in the right direction.

So I would much appreciate any suggestions for what current CDs I should be buying them which will not make them look quite as nerdy as they are looking at the moment.

When I was 12, Guns N' Roses were the coolest band in the world. Who's their equivalent now?

Couldn't go wring with a bit of the Killers or the Kooks, surely?

Of course if you really want people to respect their taste in music, buy them the Counting Crows!!!!! :D

Less trendily - how about buying them some current compilation CD and see what they like on it .

By the way heard Razorlight the other day - sounded like a Talking heads tribute band to me.

I was wrong - I really like them now .

Ardross has a good idea there - a compilation like The Album, The Bands 06, NME's Essential Bands, The Anthems have some decent songs on.

I think that the NOW albums would be better as the range of music is more wide ranging, at least until you have an idea of preferences.

By the way, after their uninteresting first album, Bloc Party have just released a cracking second effort.

Yeah i agree with that, especially for a young teenager.

Do you really want to be responsible for two more Girls Aloud fans?

You're not wrong!! That's why I didn't suggest Now - it's full of shite like Pop Idol...

I watched them at the NME awards a couple of years ago (with The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs and The Futureheads) and thought they were superb live, so bought the first album and was very disappointed, so was hoping this would be better. Its out tomorrow isnt it or was it last week.

  Oo-aar, that they Dinah Ross gurl and they Wurzels! Maaarvellous!

Jinny, I'd get them straight onto Wagner and blow their little eardrums apart. None of this putzing about with this or that nine-week wonder - one great drum-rolling, cymbal-crashing overture should see them right for several weeks.

As for the kids, I wouldn't rush to force anything on to them.

Neither Mrs O or I are that into music either (I was 23 when I bought my first LP) and I presumed my daughter would just go with the flow around her peers at school. However, when she was about 15 she asked me one day in the car if we could play one of her cassettes instead of listen to the radio. Pretending not to sigh with resignation, I agreed.

From memory, her cassette consisted of tracks by (though not necessarily in this order):

Abba
The Beatles
Queen
S Club 7
Steps
Boyzone
Westlife
Frank Sinatra
Ella Fitzgerald
ELO
Dusty Springfield
The Corrs
etc, etc
and some of her Irish dancing music

She told me she'd just picked up our albums and checked if she liked them and copied the tracks she liked. She said she had a few compilations she'd done herself.

Hi Kirsty, I think they will thank you a lot more (as well as seeing you as their trendy Aunt) if you 'steer' them towards a nice little MP3 player instead of any CD's. There aint much difference between the two in price and they will both be able to put on their players whatever they like...

Budget MP3 players

I think for a young teenager you`d like something that`s gonna make him stand out from the crowd. I would strongly advise you have nothing to do with anything NME related, indie music has not really progressed since the days of Pulp and Blur really. Also, nothing EMO...unless you`re ok with him looking like a twat once he gets the haircut.

My tips:

Gnarls Barkley
Outkast

The Good, The Bad & The Queen (new Damon Albarn band - supposed to be real good, will do wonder`s for a 12yo`s street cred)

Mastodon (just in case he likes a bit of metal - i was introduced to the genre when i was 13)

Yeah Yeah Yeah`s (Kind of indie, but with cooler guitars)
