Since the start of the century, the Aintree festival has seen 25 odds on shots take their chance. Sixteen have prevailed. Big Bucks 4 times and Sprinter Sacre twice being the most high profile winners.
In 2008, race goers witnessed a double shock as both Kauto Star and Master Minded were beaten at 4/7 and 2/5 from the Paul Nicholls stable ( 5-2 overall this century ).
It has been a different story since with 11 odds on shots in a row prevailing until Hargam from the Henderson yard ( 5-1 overall ) finished 6th last year to break the sequence.
The other trainer of note who has had multiple odds on shot runners is Jonjo O' Neill (3-1 overall ).
Today sees Willie with his first odds on runner in the shape of Annie Power. Based on statistics, hurdle races ( excluding Juvenile ) have a great record for shorties ( 11-3 overall ) which augurs well for the favourite. Although I do think The New One could be a live danger at respectable odds.
Cue Card has run 4 times at Aintree all over 2 1/2 miles with one win in a Juvenile Hurdle to his name. All 3 other occasions finishing second. Excluding Novice Chases, odds on shots have a poor record in Chases overall with just 2 wins from 6 selections this century. So if Cue Card were to come in for heavy support to 10/11 or even 4/5, caution is advised. This race could see a major upset today.
The two I like on the opening day for win purposes and a small double run in the opening races.
GARDE LE VICTOIRE 1.40 and APPLES JADE 2.15
Hopefully these 2 will pay for the rest of the meeting
