Very sad news on the RP site that he has died aged 61 . He had heart surgery earlier this month and was apparently well enough to have gone racing at Ascot on Friday but died on Saturday. A serious journalist , whilst one might not have agreed with all of his opinions, who clearly loved the sport and wrote that excellent book the Course Inspector which seemed to contribute to some upping their standards .

A sad loss and condolences to his family and friends .

I know DG posted about this in the general retirements thread but I think he deserves his own thread .

Terrible news, I had no idea he'd been unwell.

A top writer on racing and cricket, he really will be sorely missed. RIP.

Yes a great journalist who wrote a fabulous book on NH Racing early in his career (about '78) that entranced anyone sensible enough to read it. So sad and such terrible news.
