I overheard various conversations as I quietly enjoyed my day at Windsor but, bizarrely, two things I didn't hear all day were: "I wonder how Constitution Hill is at this precise moment?" or "Were Arkle and Flyingbolt really that much better than literally every Jumper there's been since?"

Weird lot, offline people, aren't they?

It's the only palatable conclusion to reach because, if they're not weird, it opens the door to believing half this forum are clinically insane!

And that can't possibly be right - can it?

A forces saying, apparently: "Doolally Tap". The 'tap' bit is a fever and comes from the Urdu word 'tab' meaning malarian fever. Doolally refers to the town of Deolali, which is where the British tommy would languish, in frustration, while waiting there to return to The UK. I suppose men used to go 'mad' with hanging around there and couldn't wait to get back.

Your a trouble makers who was blocked and kicked off TRF. This form doesn't appreciate negative input about others. If someone wants to bring up Nijinsky v Mill Reef because the think it's relevant you best keep your opinion to yourself

As for doolally, it's a word used extremely often in my family circles but I wasn't aware of the origins.

My father was posted to India and Pakistan during his National Service and often told us about English words that originated there.

I don't think doolally was on his radar even though it probably described him perfectly...
 
Your a big boy Des make no mistake he was having a dig at the fact Arkle V Flyingbolt was brought up in the Constitution Hill thread....you need to be doolally not to see that.....no disrespect meant
 
Nah, I think he was just marvelling at how a collection of old duffers like us can still focus on true quality when there is so much dross around catching the attention of less sophisticated aficionados. (Try saying that with a drink in you... or even writing it 🤣 )
 
I've never been big on taking a blind bit of notice of those who claim to speak for everyone - all here are individuals who will make up their own minds.

As Desert Orchid - who has never even met me, but seems an intelligent chap who gets my wry humour - says, it was a tongue-in-cheek observation that, out in the real world, most racegoers tend not to obsess about things the way many (me included, at times) do here.

If anyone doesn't like my posts they can always put me on ignore.

I will continue to post whatever I like, within the rules of the forum.

He posted that stuff at the same time as he was posting other inane shite (no offence Ian ;) ) from Windsor, where the atmosphere clearly stirred some deeply held obsessions...
 
Correct - I do rather a good line in "insane shite," or so I like to think!

I had a jolly good day, from pretending I wasn't even going to the races when some loud bloke on the train on the way there tried to strike up a conversation with me, to managing to get a racecourse seat right on the winning line.
