The second in this series is on BBC1 now - chronicling the life of Caesar. Strangely enough the series opened last week with Nero - it was very good though & I'd recommend watching it. I think it's a brilliant casting to have Sean Pertwee as Caesar - he's very good.

Trevor from Eastenders as Mark Anthony.Thought it was excellent for the last two weeks.Top quality viewing.

I Claudius is being rerun on BBC4. It's on Thursday nights and so far there have been two episodes (of thirteen) shown. If you haven't seen it - or even if you have - it is highly recommended.

I have been there, Brian. It was 8 years ago now after my time living in France. I went there with a friend. A fantastic place that salvaged my holiday after spending time in Naples (dump) and getting my wallet stolen in Rome.

I did swim out to the Blue Grotto out by Capri while staying in Naples. Getting back in the water inside the grotto after getting out and looking down is quite a scary experience!

The Blue Grotto is lovely. Went out in a little boat many years ago, and I didn't think Napoli was THAT bad. When you read (in 'The Story of San Michele') that it was mostly slums and running open sewers at the turn of the 20C, it's come on a bit since then! And the Bay of Naples - exquisite.

But just head south to the Amalfi coast, that's real natural beauty.

Unfortunately it has been listed as in severe environmental danger, along with the Great Barrier Reef and the Florida Everglades. The erosion of the coastline is a serious issue. One solution being propounded for these vulerable sites is a restriction or even total ban on tourism. Queensland and Florida would probably be able to handle that but along the Amalfi coast hey'd be left solely with lemon growing.

I recommend it most highly, from Sorrento to Salerno - Amalfi itself, Ravello, Positano, Minori and Maiori. I'm almost inclined to say visit while you can.

No Rome for me tonight: the siren calls of Extras, followed by That Mitchell & Webb Look are too strong to resist.

Brian

Did u discover the taverns where (among other activities) the earliest form of gambling took place?........where corruption was prevalent even back then!!

I see Up Pompeii is also on now on BBC 4 - an uncanny resemblance.
