Anita Roddick Dies

Very sad news :( A very astute and clever business women who was years and years ahead of so many others on green issues. A real straight talker who founded The Body Shop and was one of the first to sell products not tested on animals.

Although Anita had known she was ill, it still came as a suprise to know she passed away so suddenly.

RIP

Her pioneering business legacy was ultimately diluted when she sold her business to L'Oreal. However - she did make a difference and when I was younger I of thought her both as a hero and a bit of all-right.

Hep C infected blood after a post childbirth transfusion. What a disaster.

Yes very sad, 64 is no age, used to spend a lot in The Body shop but since she sold out to Loreal I haven't spent a penny there & never will, its Lush products for me!

Gerry Ryan - an interviewer for 20+ years on Irish Radio, has just commented that in all his years working she was by FAR the rudest person he has ever met. That surprised me.

Quite IS. Let's not get too sentimental just because she is dead - and I too am sorry to hear that esp as 64 is no age these days. But she didn't have a great reputation in personal terms, and I always find that kind of 'champagne socialism' a bit irritating. I've nothing against making loadsamoney - but let's not pretend we are bleeding hearts as well LOL

She was great at raising awareness, and ahead of her time in environmental terms - and I was an early supporter, having with friiends been into all that stuff int he 60s - but much of it was window dressing. Eg I was told by a pal's daughter who worked there as a designer that all that stuff about taking in your old bottles to be exchanged was just a gimmick - they were all thrown away :brows: And there was much talk a few years ago of her workers in the Third World being thoroughly exploited. So I admire what is to be admired, but I don't fall for the Saint Anita bit...

Tell me, does reaching pensionable age necessarily go with cynicism??
