Our PC has suddenly stopped recognising our mobile phones when we plug in the USB cable. Mrs O pointed it out to me the other day as she'd tried (for the first time in a while) to download a photo from her mobile.

I tried uninstalling and reloading the software from disc but it hasn't helped.

The only thing I can think of is that it might be connected to the problem I had with Norton a while back. Could the Norton uninstall program have wiped other programs?

The problem definitely is with the PC (rather than the phones) as Mrs O was able to download the photo on our daughter's laptop.

Any ideas?

The PC has 2 USB ports at the front of the tower and two at the back (to which things are already connected).

Neither of the front ports recognised the cable (which they had done before). When I switched the mobile phone cable to the one that houses the printer USB cable I got a message saying New Hardware Found but it soon changed to 'not recognized'.

I've tried switching the cables but get the same messages.

Mine occasionally does this so, as a well trained hairy-arsed fitter would recommend:

Remove the battery and sim card, replace the very same ones and see if your computer recognises them. I think it might if its anything like mine!

Hope itsa succcess, MR2

You've ruled out your pc hardware and the cable . It doesn't recognise either phone either so it's unlikely to be the phone.

Have you added any peripherals or software recently. It would appear that you have run out of virtual ports i.e something is using the resource that your phone would usually use.

The two front ports are empty.

The only thing I've done lately is to upgrade to AVG 9.0 but I did have that carry on with trying to uninstall Norton. I also (just the other day) tried uninstalling and reloading loading the software that accompanied the mobile phone from the original discs but when there was no change I uninstalled it again.

The ports would not have to be occupied physically. Basically sounds like a software problem where the virtual resources have been allocated to something else. Anti virus can be a dog too.

Uninstall the anti virus or any other software you've added. if that dosn't work what Os are you running you could restore to a different date .

No, it isn't an Apple. It's just a run-of-the-mill PC but it's never crashed or given us serious problems in the years or so that we've had it. (Bought just after Windows XP came out.)

Your operating system is Xp. if you do asearch for something called restore console you will get an icon. Double click and select a date previous to when the problem first occurred. It will not affect saved .docs etc. (although you should have a back up anyway)

start
Program
accessories
system tools
system restore

Restore computer to an earlier time

You will see dates highlighted on a calendar, pick one before your problem occurred and follow the prompts.

Have a query myself if anyone can help...

Someone else was using my PC for a few days last week, and ever since i havent been able to watch replays on ATR.com plus a few other things are strange. The ATR website says "Your browser settings prevent the use of cookies.
