Ever since I've had a PC, I've had WinTV and been able to watch TV on the PC.

Occasionally, since I got this new PC a couple of years ago, when I opened the WinTV program while the internet (dial-up) was connected, the PC crashed and self-recovered. If I opened the TV program first then connected to the internet there wasn't a problem.

However, since I switched to broadband about a month ago, every time I try to open the WinTV program the PC crashes.

Have any of you had the same problem? If so did you manage to overcome it?

Are you using an external modem? Or an internal one? Also, is the WinTV provided by an internal card or an external box?

I'm presuming it's an external one - a little blue Sagem box-thingy that came through the post?

The TV card came built-in with my original PC (from Dan Computers) over 10 years ago and I asked for it to be transferred to the new PC when I ordered it (from PC World).

How does the Sagem box connect to your PC - by USB I presume? Did the old modem you used for dial-up connect the same way?

The connector to the back panel of the PC was the same size etc as the one for the dial-up. I took out the dial-up one and stuck in the new one.

Apologies for the lack of technospeak

Does the plug going from the modem to the computer look like one of these:

If so, it is indeed a USB connection. I suspect what's happening is that the TV card and the USB port are conflicting.

Are there any other similar sockets that you can plug the modem into? On the front of the case, perhaps?

It doesn't look like either of those, ie., the bit that plugs into the back panel of the PC doesn't. It's smaller and white, about half the width of a telephone connection and has a little tab underneath to help unplug, as with a normal telephone connection.

Let me know if you meant the bit that connects into the blue modem box-thing.

On (maybe) a different point, my ZA trial was to end today. I was worried about how slowly the PC was performing lately and you wouldn't believe how much faster it is since I uninstalled ZA :o :o Any ideas why this would be the case?

If this is a hardware conflict it's probably going to be one of those things that needs someone physically at the computer to fix. I'm guessing you're not too comfortable with the idea of opening up the box and putting the TV card into a different slot? Or messing about with BIOS settings?

As for Zone Alarm, most of those monitoring programs use up a great deal of system memory, so its no surprise.

Thanks, Gareth. The PC is due it's annual check-up so I'll mention it when I take it in and hopefully some bright spark at PCW will be able to sort it.
