This morning, Mrs Relkeel was drying her hair. Suddenly, then was a spark and a bang from the hairdrier and it emitted a small amount of smoke.

Since then, none of the other electrical items in the flat are working (including the fridge/freezer :angy: ).

What happened?

What do I need to do?

I know nothing about electrics, so please keep your answers "dumbed down".

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the fusebox, Relks??? It probably tripped a switch in the fusebox, or blew a fuse. I'm assuming you know where the fusebox is, honey, ( :P  ) have a look to see if the big switch at the side is in the on or off position. I'm guessing it's tripped and is in the off position, just switch it to on! :D I had a tumble drier that used to trip the switch when I lived in Sparsholt - the fuse box was high above the door in the back porch though so we had to keep a broom by the door to flick it back on again!!

No, I don't.

We haven't got a porch.

Ha bloody ha - I see that moving back to blighty hasn't blunted your wit, yet.... ;)

Did I tell you the weather is fantastic here??? Remember hot summer nights sat in Casemates with an alcoholic beverage or three?? B)

Fusebox is probably on the wall near the front door, m'dear - or in the utility room if you have one? Probably fairly high up too - luckily mine is at pygmy level!! :D

Sounds like a tripped switch to me. Find this and check all of the switches, especially the big one are pointing in the right direction (preferably the on position)!

In my old house the washing machine used to trip the electrics every spin cycle - it wasn't long before I gave up resetting the video!

Thank you Shad and Betsmate.

It sounds like it isn't as bad as I thought it might be.

I can't wait to get home to a pool of water on the kitchen floor and throw away all of the shopping we spent a fortune on on Tuesday.

Well done for finding the picture, Betsmate - that, and your explanation, is a lot clearer than mine!!!! Not really surprising though I guess.....

It might depend on the age of your property. If it's reasonably recent (10 years or so), it should have easily access to the fuse box. It sounds as if the main switch has tripped - usually just a question of moving it the other way.

If the property is older, it might require more intricate work with fuse wire, etc.

Relks - as long as the freezer is kept shut, it should be ok until either yourself or Mrs R get back in. Freezers tend to be ok for 12-24hrs as it won't be until then that they start to defrost as long as the door isn't opened to let in warm air! Your shopping should be ok, never fear, you can still have pie & chips for dinner, I'm sure!! :D
