I'm having a lot of trouble this week with the cursor hanging when attempting to access links put up on this site, and also the race details on the RP's results section. I can access websites okay, but not all of the links within them. The cursor just goes into 'stuck hourglass' mode for a minute, then abandons the attempt at making the link. It's really annoying!

I've tried running a full virus scan (no problems), and I've followed Microsoft's advice and run the pc in Safe Mode, but I can't seem to stop it hanging.

Any (helpful) advice will be much appreciated.

Thank you, sweetheart. <_< I know one is game, but I can't for the life of me remember what the other is...

It's sodding about again, hanging even trying to access the NTL homepage. Sighhhh... don't computers work properly for more than a few months? :(

Hallo, sensible, helpful Gareth! :D

I've: dumped History, cleaned out Temp Internet Files, run the McAfee virus scan, run start in Safe Mode, run Windows Update, and realized that the Pop-Up stopper wasn't set to full blast, and remedied that.

I've just tried to access Brian's link, but instead of hanging, it's shown a Pop-Up Blocked logo and still not let me in, so I'll just have to vote for someone entirely unsuitable!

It had started to hang when trying to access the Home Page, but at the moment, it's now performing perfectly. It might just've been the need for a Window Update, which I forget to check often enough. So, I may be denying myself some links, but never mind. I'll check out your recommendation, too. Many thanks! :)

Jon you can set up Windows to automatically update as long as you have either the ME, the 2000 or the XP version of Windows

Windows Update

Go here and scroll down to

Hallo, DG! Thanks - I spent many a merry moment faffing about with that, too, and have just found out that NTL are 'servicing' this area, and will do a reboot after 8 pm tonight. So, I'll shut down the set-top box around 8.30 and see how we go...

If no further communication, it'll be because the Compaq will have failed its flying test from the 2nd floor window...

Hiya jon
if your PC was working ok last week, why not try a system restore - it's very easy to do and may well help.
The only problem with restoring the system to an earlier date is if you have installed any new progs after that date, it will mean reinstalling them but thats easy enough.

Go to:
START
PROGRAMS
ACCESORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
SYSTEM RESTORE
RESTORE MY COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER TIME
If you look on the small callender, there will be dates that are
blacked out, this means your system did an auto save on that date.
just click on that date and it will restore your system to that.
Won't take very long to do.

May be worth a try.

Trig, thanks for the idea, but I tried that, and the problem is that the silly programme won't let me restore further back than April 13 - the problem initially started (although at the time I thought it was just a minor one-off glitch) a couple of days earlier than that.

This is what happens: I can access this site, but when I try to access a link, like Brian's on 'who you should vote for', the little hand sticks on the line after highlighting it, then becomes an hourglass, which then sticks for around a minute. It then goes back to being a normal arrow cursor, but won't access the link.

On the RP site, I can access as far as 'Results', but as soon as I want to access the individual races, to see how the horses finished, it does the same thing.

More worryingly, every time I try the 'Help & Support' icon on the Desktop, I get a McAfee alert that a 'suspicious scripting' has been attempted. On Microsoft's own 'Helpline' it's doing the same thing - letting me see the site, but not access the individual help links - and again giving a 'suspicious scripting' alert. I've stopped all the scripts, and re-run the full McAfee scan, which tells me no problems were found!

I'll have to call NTL again now, I guess, and tell them that their service may have ended in the area, but my problems haven't! :(

Anyway, thanks v. much for the interest in helping - it's appreciated.

:D :D :D :D :D :D GARETH FLYNN!! I WUV YOU!! I WUV YOU!! :D :D :D

I don't belieeeeeeve it! Got thru on the link fine, and the regsvr32 went straight through, and I can access all links again! On the upside, I have learned just about every possible bit of trouble-shooting one can do today, plus spent 2 useless hours waiting for NTL to respond... you are a little treasure. Please accept this rather large drink, which I'll be very glad to buy you if we meet up racing! Seriously, that's absobloominglutely fantastic, and I'll agree with everything you say on the forum from now on! :D
