Arkle Doc

Not sure what channel TG4 is but this is the write up for tonights episode

In 1964, the greatest steeplechaser of all time beat the champion of England in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Arkle's victory over Mill House became known as the Race of the Century.
This documentary examines how the legend has grown over the past half century and compares the horse to many of the modern greats of the chasing game.
With contributions from Sir Peter O'Sullevan, who commentated on Arkle's three successive Gold Cup victories; trainers Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls and Ted Walsh; broadcaster Brough Scott; Jim Dreaper, son of Arkle's trainer Tom; and Cath Walwyn, widow of Mill House's trainer Fulke Walwyn.

I watched it last night - cracking stuff. Had never seen footage of Arkle's last race in the King George and the subsequent analysis of exactly how he broke his hoof. And Anne Duchess of Westminster sounded like a proper, proper posh geezer.

The 1967 GC v Flyingbolt may be the greatest race never to have happened, but he still remains the greatest.

Paul Nicholls (and Ted Walsh, I suppose) just can't get their head round the idea of anything possibly being 18lbs better than Kauto Star, can they?

It was good and seeing for example the footage of the poor horse being overhauled up the run in in the 1966 GC was fascinating.

The thing that is striking about such documentaries is the passing of time. There was one made a few years back called Portrait of a Legend which had interviews with people like the Duchess who of course are no longer with us . In which she told the remarkable story about how she brought him home for the summer and rode him about all the time - would go on rides with him and she would have a picnic and lie down and he would lie down next to her with his head on her arm .

It sounds like his extraordinary character played a part as well as his brilliance in becoming such a legend . I loved the story of him taking a race card out of a racegoers' hand who evidently was not paying him enough attention.

I fell asleep before it started, that's what you get from being doped up to the eyeballs with colds meds, will catch up with it on 4OD later, sounds like it was good
