Arkle

About the 1964 Gold Cup:

"With the BBC's backing it had been switched from a Thursday to a Saturday"

Never knew that - imagine the outcry if that happened now?

Fabulous presentation.
Amazed that Arkle pulled so much for first circuit yet still won in 1964.
My best racing buddy tells a story of a man he met at the races once.
Said man had picked all the winners on this day yet had no bet.
My friend was dumb struck that he wasted such a talent !
"Well" said the man "I used to bet a lot once. I hit a bad losing streak and was deeply in debt. I worked as a bank clerk and had one option open to me to clear my debts; empty my drawer of cash some Saturday and put it all on a sure thing. Collect the winnings, replace the cash in my drawer first thing Monday , pay my debts with the winnings and start again.
The Saturday came and he did as above.
His first trip was into a travel agent for a one way passenger ferry ticket to England.
His next trip was to the bookies. He spent the afternoon walking the streets of town with a betting slip in one hand and the ferry ticket in the other, knowing that he would be throwing one of them away before the day was out.He also knew his life would never be the same again whatever the result. Arkle won; he went back to the bank and he never had another bet.
Sobering stuff but a story I always associate with 1964 Gold Cup.
