The heavens could open until now and Tuesday and presumably it will still be Good To Firm?

ASCOT turned its taps on on Friday, with the irrigation system adding the equivalent of 6mm of rain to the straight course.
However, on Friday clerk of the course Chris Stickels was still calling the ground good to firm, good in places.
Stickels and his staff started the watering at 8am on Friday, turning off the sprinklers at 5pm, and he said: "It's almost good after that, but, with littlerain forecast for Saturday and Sunday, the going seems sure to quicken up again."
"We have been told to expect showers in the early part of next week but it's far from a settled picture and how much rain we will eventually get is not, apparently, easy to predict.
"There is the possibility of stormy weather activity on Monday going into Tuesday, but there are doubts about that too, and we've been told to expect only small amounts of rain, or possibly even none at all, during racing on Tuesday.
"What water we've put on today was designed to replace what moisture we'd lost through sunshine and breeze on Thursday, but it is not as warm, nor quite so windy today, so we shall have to see how things pan out before making further plans."

With a few heavy showers around between now and then things should be okay. Ascot can take a fair bit. So a bit of watering shouldn't go amiss.

It would take major cocking up (or being very unlucky) to get the ground far wrong one way or the other.

No, but no matter what the rest of the going (it could be heavy) it'll be the home straight that is guaranteed to be at least good to firm!

Good to Firm. (GoingStick: Overall 9.4, Straight 10.3, Round 8.9 on Tuesday at 08:00) Watered 4mm on whole course overnight. 1mm rain overnight. Dry Tuesday. Light rain possible Wednesday afternoon/evening. Mainly dry thereafter.

Just as well they didn't get the torrent of rain that fell in some parts of london yesterday. Have not seen rain like it outside of Asia.

Haven't seen rain like that in a long time, our patio was under 3" of water from about 5pm until I went to bed at 10pm, thunder & lightening started around 2pm & didn't let up untill fairly late on,

Several houses locally were hit by lightening & flooding,

Water gone this morning but the chickens are padding around in mud!

Has anyone seen any of the reports from the track yet? Are we sure they have not had this rain this morning?

The going is 'good to firm' with just a milimetre of rain having arrived overnight, to supplement the 4mm that was added by watering yesterday. Clerk of the course Chris Stickels said this morning: "I'm delighted with the state of the ground ahead of the meeting. We are forecast a dry day today with a light bit of rain on Wednesday but it's generally due to be fine for the rest of the week." As is usual since the turf was dug up during the redevelopment, the going stick reading confirms that the ground is some way quicker in the straight than it is on the round course.

I wouldnt read too much into what they say the going is.....Indeed, they like to make it up.

There is a GREAT thread on the betfair forum, in the ante post part, under the title Clerkwatch 2009 created bya guy called Jonjo, it really does show the clerk of courses taking everyone for a ride..........................

The same meter reading can be good one week, and soft in another or water whenever they want even though the going stick indicates it is soft already.

Well Worth a Read for anyone interested in the matter.
