To some extent it lacks the rawer cut of Life On Mars, but I did enjoy tonights episode.

I'm afraid that I have atteneded too many left wing meetings, and too many where I swear I lost the will to live!!! But that recreation was hilarious as I must confess I recognised too many of the characters and the rhetoric. It was surpassed though when Gene Hunt gets them all in for questioning, and they end up lecturing the non-plused police on quasi intellectual subjects.

I couldnt connect with Life on Mars at all. Yet again a series set in bloody boring grim Manchester again...

Much rather watch an old Sweeney (ITV4)

Also doesnt even compare with the likes of the Sopranos and the Wire

British TV is light years behind HBO

No doubt. Although we seem to be ok for comedy - The Mitchell and Webb look was on BBC2 at the same time last night - very funny.

Which seasons of The Wire are the best? I'm about two-thirds of the way through the first boxset - I'd call it good-but-not-great so far but I've barely heard a bad word against it so presumably it just gets better?

Ive not actually seen the first series. But I gathered that it picked up well after the series two. For me, the third/fourth are superb.

I actually started watching it with series 4.

All four series are excellent but i`d go with the second as the best. Currently downloading season 5 from Bitcomet one episode at a time.

It`s a crime that it`s never been on prime time TV over here.

Actually..im getting muddled. ive seen 2 and 4. Both superb.... I would go for 4 as slightly stronger . More complex maybe

Euro

Anotehr HBo series which might not be of obvious appeal is Big Love

Unlike teh Wire, that was quite a ratings success in the US. look it up. Its riveting....

I suppose i will recommend it to Gareth too

The first season is very slow really. I started on it not long after finishing watching the first four seasons of The Shield, a show that was like BAM! in your face from the pilot episode. I think because The Wire was on HBO they felt secure enough to just take it easy at first, fill out all the characters first.
