Heya all.
Need advice on ATM's and specifically how to get money back owing to typing in the particular amount i wanted but not getting it out of the cash till.
I'll try explain now.
At about 11 pm i tried to take money out of a cash till, owing to whatever problem it wouldn't let me but DID take the money off my card, is that alllowed? (i had to take the money out properly - it took it off my card twice), just a bit confused, my local branch is up the road from me (HSBC) so i'm popping in to see them tommorow but given the hassle i've had trying to get a new card when an ATM swallowed my old one i'm, wonddering if it's not best just to change banks.

Hope you can help
Martin x

I don't think you have a prayer here, Martin. The best you can hope for is that the machine had a camera good enough to pick up the fact that you didn't get your cash.

Surely there is an internal log of how much money the machine is stacked with each day, and it must have a register of how much is dispensed. If the two do not tally by the amount you say you were charged, you may just have a chance.

Dave is right.

I have two questions though -

1) Why is this question aimed at older members?

2) What's the "Martin x" all about? Don't be going kissing me now....

Martin

A similar think once happened to me. I went inside the branch to report it and the cashier told me that it was very likely that the money would be re-credited within 15 minutes.

It was.

PS I am not old. I only read this thread because I am nosey.

Most banks have a policy of automatically refunding money reported missing through errors such as this, basically taking people's word for it and allowing people 1 or 2 chances before they refuse. give them a phone Martin.

I am not old either.

i think you should have treated the matter with a degree of urgency. reported the error immediately by phone or visited the branch in question the next day.

it is not unheard of for banks to recredit accounts without emperical evidence but you must be very assertive and it will help if your account has been maintained in a satisfactory manner.

good luck.

It's aimed at older members as i believe wisdom comes with age though all advice is appreciated.

Will be going to see them in the morning about it and hopefully they'll be able to sort it out.

Hope they can get it sorted and would have treated it with urgency but for being unable to move till about 4pm :(

As probably the oldest forumite (after Brian, who'll be receiving the Queen's telegram this year), I only read it because I thought it might actually tell me something about auto-tellers. I usually stand in front of them expecting the dosh, when in fact they're still waiting for me to answer the 25th question correctly before condescending to give me my own money.
