I had quite a frightening experience down in leafy Epsom this afternoon. I took my 8 month old Jack Russell with me as I am clearing a house and he was happily playing in the garden with my boyfriend when I heard suddenly heard alot of shouting. My boyfriend rushed in to say that Barney had just attacked a fox. Now this garden in in a very quiet cul de sac and has a largish garden but I must admit I thought he must have been mistaken. It was a beautifully sunny afternoon so why would a fox be in the garden attacking a puppy? My boyfriend was carrying Barney who seemed absolutely no worse for the experience. It turns out that Barney spotted something amongst the flower bed and went over and barked when all of a sudden the fox jumped out at him snarling, Barney ran backwards and my boyfriend caught him. He was convinced the fox was still in the same place so I went out to look and he was right, I could see his big ears peeking out over the flowers. The fox looked very, very old, really filthy dirty with much of his fur missing and was very, very underweight. I think he had come to the garden to die. He did not look well at all. There was no point calling the RSPCA, so I am expecting to find the deceased fox later this week when I next return. I was sad to see the fox in this state, as he looked literally hours from certain death and I am grateful he was so infirm (couldn't move) or Barney could have been very badly bitten or worse.
