Barney has a girlfriend (Barney being my little 14 month old dog) and he has become very friendly in the last year with Sally who is about the same age. Sally is now in season, and it is driving Barney nuts. He won't eat, hardly sleeps and just whines all day.

Can anyone give me any advice as to what I can do to pacify him? Is there anything I can do as his little heart is about to jump out of his skin and he is in a right old state. Sally lives next door to where I work, so I am going to have to keep him at home for a few days.

How long will this go on for, does anyone know?

Thanks.

Brian/PDJ had thought about this BUT I was hoping he would mate one day so I could have one of his puppies. I think him and Sally have actually.... well, you know, done it (as he managed to run off and spend a little time with her unnoticed) so I am going to be interested to see if Sally is "in foal" and if she is, do they look like Barney? The big ears will definitely be a big clue!

You really should do your utmost to keep him away from bitches in heat Kathy, if you're not going to have him castrated. It's about the only way you can handle things for two main reasons (both of which you've noted!!) namely that the dog gets uncontrollably excited; you'll want to hope that he doesn't start spraying in the house/office - this is a usual trait of a dog when he smells a bitch in heat - he wants to mark his terrritory to ward off other potential fathers of the pups. Secondly, again, as you mention - a dog will do virtually anything possible to get to the bitch & mate with her so despite your best precautions he may still escape & mate with her (as you already suspect!). The only two ways around this are either castration or keeping the dog as far away from the bitch as possible so he can't detect her scent.

I know a few blokes like that...

I tend to agree. Unless you definitely want to breed from dogs them they should be neutered

Tricky one this - I've had some of my Weimaraner bitches spayed and also a male I bred castrated - because he was living with two bitches who weren't spayed and it simply wouldn't have been fair to him. I wasn't going to use him on them as he wasn't quite good enough but he had a wonderful temperament and had a long and pretty useless life other than as chief cuddling dog !!

In Barney's case, if you want a peaceful coupe of weeks, Kathy, then you have to keep him well away from the bitch in season and you need to keep your distance from her as well, as Barney will still get wound up if you come home smelling of her! And there's nothng worse than those horrible little terriers who hump people's legs - yuck... B)

Keeping an entire dog isn't exactly difficult and if you want to breed him to her (if he hasn't already!) then just remember to keep him away from bitches in season until she is old enough to bred. I think 14 months is a little young, although I know the smaller breeds often have their first litters at around 18 months.

I have three bitches here, all of whom are threatening to come into season in the next couple of weeks or so and none are going to be bred, so it's a question of making sure my fencing is dog-proof and only exercising them where we won't meet other dogs - pretty easy for me here on the farm, I admit. Still going to be a nightmare, though!!

Thanks for the advice everyone! B) Barney will be staying at home until Sally has "cooled down" then, which is what we thought. He will have the cat for company during the day, but should he try and mount her at any time, he's in for one hell of feline slap!

Great, I will volunteer to go home to do the walkies during the day! :D

Erm... what about the equivalent of a blow-up doll? Couldn't a soft toy be rubbed onto the bitch's fur and then given to Barney to, er, cuddle? After all, if this sort of thing works for the most intelligent species on Earth, surely it'll work for a wee doggie?

He's currently having a sexual "experience" with an old pillow! (that's Barney not the b/f!)

  I was a bit worried for a mo, Kathy! Ah, bless. It's like being a teenager and practising snogging on your teddy bears. Or so I believe.
