Hi can any one tell me how the Racing Post calculates the beaten distance of horses in topspeed, I am producing speed figures for winners, but am not sure about how to do those who finish behind winner, I understand that the RP has a page where you can rate a race, but as I do not sign up for the RP I was wondering if any one knew what calculations they use.

Thank you EC1 is it possible that you could explain for example why 18, what doe it represent

its a best fit..some people might use 19 or 20

there are numerous ways people calculate beaten distance..some change the poundage for course beaten on..ie Epsom beaten 5 lengths would represent a smaller time beaten than at Pontefract.

At end of day its not really worth getting to obsessive about as there are many inaccuracies involved in the whole business of handicapping by speed or form. Also you have to think that a horse beaten 5-10 lengths is probably not being ridden to best ability at end of a race..so even if you knew to the nearest ounce what rating it actually earned on paper..it would still not be fully accurate as the jock could probably have gotten another 2/3 lengths out of it if ridden fully out.

EC, do you know whether they amend that best fit number to take going description into account?

who are they?:)

bha have different lengths times for slower ground as far as i know..so ground conditions would be covered by that.

the best way is to calculate a time for each horse then treat it same as you would the winner..but for someone who is starting out the above is a best fit to start with

if someone wanted exactness then it would best to work out each race length time per race..73.33 horse lengths per furlong...horse length 9ft... so if an 8f race is 96 seconds then each length is 96/586.66 = 0.164 sec per length. BHA us 6 lengths per second..which is 0.167 sec per length. so if a horse is officially beaten 1 second then it will be said to have been beaten 6 lengths. on good or faster..but if someone wants it exact,,then its 1 second/0.164 for that particular race

Personally..even for me..its not a massive issue. I don't get too bothered about very slow ground figures anyway in the great scheme of things to worry about it

1 second on good or faster ground equals 6 lenghts
1 second on good to soft equals 5.5 l
1 second on soft or slower ground equals 5 l

By "they" I meant Topspeed in the RP. Is the best fit number varied at all due to the ground (i.e. firm ground 20/soft 16 etc)?

i don't know the exact method TS uses..wouldn't he just use the same method for all goings and trust the scale that the BHA use as posted above by LBM. You could email him.

when you think about a quest for accuracy..also bear in mind the mistaken times that are recorded. For instance..in the RP today the race that Pyjama Party won last night at Ripon is recorded as 96.33..when in fact its 99.33.its a typo clearly ..but when you get errors like that it makes you wonder why bother with a few odd lbs here or there with beaten horse
