All over bbc2 tonight and superb footage

the remasted cds are supposed to be a bit special but they would be wouldnt they?

It is still stunning the amount of breathtakingly brilliant material they recorded in just seven years. Thats the gap between two Oasis albums isnt it?

The range of their imagination and the sheer energy of their recordings remains extraordinary. Am i saying anything new?

im a jazz soul and classical fan really, but the Beatles were just incredible

My top five?

Elaenor rigby
All my loving
For no one
Strawberry fields
Shes leaving home

Just heard Cant buy me love. oh jesus....how can it be kept to just five?

Unfair to compare them to Oasis. Oasis appealed to a different generation and are in my opinion the outstanding band of the last twenty years. Defintly Maybe is the soundtrack to the late 20s early 30s generation.

I dont mind Oasis at all and its unfair to compare any band to the Beatles. You cant...

But the point about the amount of creativity stands.

I can't see they are the outstanding band of the last 20 years tbh..I know I've not got my finger on the pulse like I used to have with being old like:)....but...what about...

REM
U2
VERVE
RADIOHEAD
STONE ROSES
BLUR

NOW..Obviously those bands ain't all my cup of tea but they must be running Oasis close or beating them surely

I'm recording the film Help and gonna pinch all the music clips off it ..always liked the live footage in both films but never back to backed them

been some good stuff on tonight..the footage of the first US tour was amazing quality

Tremendous coverage, and an eye-opener for those of 'tender' years like me and Mrs Grass (early-forties both). I don't mind saying that we've had a right good drink and a jig round the place throughout the Beeb's coverage.

It's even put me in sufficiently good of a mood to ask legit questions around where STS hits in the pantheon of Flat greats. Yes....the coverage has been that good.

The self-titled "Stone Roses" pissed all over Defintely Maybe, Gearoid........it's not even a contest.

Its a age thing. I love the stone roses and I would not argue which is the better album. My point is Clives Beatles is my Oasir. Your preferences for bands depends on your age. I find U2 boring but thats just me.

You reckon?

I had Clivex pegged at about 17 until I heard he was into Classical?

Maybe he's into Charlotte Church and Il Divo? :D

Edit: U2 are not boring - their shite (or at least have been for a good 15 years).

To play along with my old mucker clivex, my top five would be:

Paperback Writer
Magical Mystery Tour
Hey Jude
I am The Walrus
Let It Be

As someone who views rock from the outside a bit I would also say i cant abide U2. Oasis are fine but only acts that have interested me over past twenty years would be REM on occasions and Springsteen

Anyway, this is about the Beatles

Almost inevtiably Grasshoppers top five includes one of the few very tracks i dont much care for, Magical Mystery

I dont agree at all that preference for bands depends on age. why should it?

Ok, there is the soundtrack to your clubbing and bird chasing years, mine would be early 80's soul. But i wouldnt put that stuff above Mozart of Coltrane just because i wasnt born 300 or 100 years ago

If you were to survey people aged under to name their top 3 songs of all time and than did the same with those aged over 30 to do the same you will get two very differrent answers.

But I think that may be changing. Pre Internet days it took energy to look for new music - buying the magazines, wading through all the new shit that was released and listening to hour upon hour of the friday rock show or John Peel. Once one got to 30/35 that became a drag.

But now underground as well as mainstream music is readily available, you have excellent streaming sites like Last FM and online music mags like Pitchfork. So I reckon more people aged 30+ are still active musically than ever before for those reasons.

Thats probably true and there are so many specialist radio stations on the net too. I l/isten to a great jazz one from San Francisco and Solar in the UK

The more exposed you become to more music the more the real genius of certain artists is appreciated. I worked in the music industry for a few years and met many who were very involved at all levels. It was striking that the Beatles were held in awe by just about anyone you had a converstaion with on that very subject, regardless of the music they currently worked with and regardless of their age

I watched a bit of HELP last night - were they on something when they made that?

Very probably :)

I'm with Clivex as far as The Beatles are concerned. The originality, range and diversity of their stuff in a seemingly eternal seven years is nothing short of phenomenal.

I have their '1' album and you can detect the range in those 27 tracks. Factor in the remainder of the Sgt Pepper's album and the different stuff on other albums and you have an eclectic compendium of the very best music from a whole range of bands.

There simply will neer be a group to get anywhere near them. If Sea Bird or Arkle were groups they wouldn't see which way the Beatles went.

top 5 is a hard one - I liked a lot of George's music - the tribute to George concert showcases his talents..i actually think as a solo artist George was the best of them in later years re song writing

1. Hey Jude
2. Blackbird
3. In My Life
4. Drive My Car
5. You're Gonna Lose That Girl

closest band to them for influencing other bands is Led Zep..different genre but they were the biggest band of the 70's without doubt

its impossible to measure the influence the Beatles had..they were awesome..they were the soundtrack to my early years and I well remember the effect that She Loves You ...just on its own had..that was a massive hit and was the record of the year without doubt

I was a young record buyer from 1963 onwards..and the anticipation for the new Beatle record was unreal...they were events

Interesting list EC. In my life would be very close to my top five

Others that i cant believe i didnt include were Norweigan Wood (achingly beatiful and timeless), im still sleeping, Something (harrisons masterpiece) and ticket to ride (love the sluggish tempo). List goes on doesnt it
