Yon "new" Beatles album thread has got me thinking that we need a quiz on Beatles trivia. Here are my ten questions - others can feel free to add any after they've answered the lot!

Google away!

1) Who plays drums on the 1962 single version of "Love Me Do"?
2) What song originally recorded for the "Help!" album was found to be surplus to requirements but was later brought back out of storage and released on the "Rubber Soul".
3) What did the Beatles do in order to achieve the "like a Tibetan monk singing from a mountainside" effect in "Tomorrow Never Knows"?
4) And who did they have to hide it from?
5) Which two songs, originally written in 1962, were dusted off and recorded for albums much later in the Beatles career?
6) Who plays drums on "Where My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
7) According to the NME charts of the day, what was the Beatles first number 1 single?
8) According to the "Paul Is Dead" story - what is the name of the man who has been masquerading as Paul since 1966?
9) How did the Beatles find America (USA)?
10) What was the song "Across The Universe" originally recorded for?

1. Andy White
2. Wait?
5. One After 909 was on Let It Be, not sure about the other one although I think McCartney wrote When I'm 64 many years before Pepper.
6. McCartney
7. All My Loving
9. DG has it right - Turn left at Greenland
10. Originally recorded for the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, but rejected and put on a World Wildlife Fund charity album.

1) Who plays drums on the 1962 single version of "Love Me Do"?
Andy White

2) What song originally recorded for the "Help!" album was found to be surplus to requirements but was later brought back out of storage and released on the "Rubber Soul".
“I've Just Seen A Face"

3) What did the Beatles do in order to achieve the "like a Tibetan monk singing from a mountainside" effect in "Tomorrow Never Knows"?
The technicians wired John Lennon's voice through a Leslie speaker for Out of Phase Stereo

4) And who did they have to hide it from?
George Martin ?

5) Which two songs, originally written in 1962, were dusted off and recorded for albums much later in the Beatles career?

6) Who plays drums on "Where My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
Ringo - it was the first song he played on after leaving the band in a huff a few weeks earlier. He returned to find flowers on his drums to welcome him back. Eric Clapton played lead guitar.

7) According to the NME charts of the day, what was the Beatles first number 1 single?
”Please please me”

8) According to the "Paul Is Dead" story - what is the name of the man who has been masquerading as Paul since 1966?
William Campbell

9) How did the Beatles find America (USA)?

10) What was the song "Across The Universe" originally recorded for?
It was a charity single

Progress report.

1) Andy White
2) Wait (I've Just Seen A Face is on Help!)
3) not answered correctly yet (Wiki is wrong! )
4) not answered correctly yet
5) When I'm 64 and One After 909
6) I'm going to retract this question as I've just had a thought that I might have chosen the wrong song - I suspect it was Ballad Of John & Yoko on which Paul played drums. (1 pt to Brian in that case)
7) Please Please Me
8) William Campbell (well googled Brian)
9) Turned left at Greenland
10) Happy Jack has it with the WWF Album.

So still looking for correct answers to Questions 3 & 4. ;)

I might lodge an objection for (3)
Object away. I have set a reminder to check tonight and will be honest enough to own up if I'm wrong. :D

Will you accept Mark Lewisohn's book entitled "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road Years 1962-1970", which is a breakdown of every recording session that the Beatles undertook, what they recorded and how it was recorded as a reference point?

Of course, but take a look at this (not Wiki):
OOPS

By the way, I didn't Google for William Campbell. As a quizster I have a memory full of totally useless bits of information. That is one of them.

Appeal thrown out - I've Just Seen A Face is definitely on Help! and Wait was recorded during those sessions and held over until Rubber Soul.

Er, I think that you are talking about (2) while I was lodging an objection about (3)

Objection sustained. Brian is right, I am wrong. The moral of the story being don't set a quiz off the top of your head even if you are "certain" of the answers. :D

However, that does raise certain questions about the method which I thought had been used - namely - "letting John use a very thin microphone wrapped in a plastic bag in a milk bottle half filled with water" (Quote is from a tape engineer). Tinterweb suggests that it was Yellow Submarine, which would make some kind of sense, however, no one else does. Lewisohn is quite detailed on YS but fails to mention this methodology. Other tomes give an abbreviated form of Lewisohn's content (but they are previous works). McCartney's biography suggests the sound in question was made in an echo chamber. Furthermore, the quote above is attributed to the sessions for Sgt Pepper. Anyone with a reliable source who can confirm which song this method was used in please let me know. :D (The studio manager being the person they had to hide it from).

So with the moral above in mind, here are some more questions which I unearthed whilst searching for answers last night.

1) What was the Abbey Road album initially going to be called and why?
2) Who played saxophone on "You Know My Name"?
3) What word does the semaphore on the cover of Help! spell?
4) At the end of Sgt Pepper there is a section of chopped tape which is supposed to say something when played backwards. What does it say?
5) Who was Dr Robert?
6) Who did Paul take to a recording session for Fixing A Hole?
7) How did John supposedly contribute to the death of Stuart Sutcliffe?
8) Which artist whom The Beatles met in Hamburg in 1962 created the cover of Revolver and later played with the Plastic Ono Band?

How did John supposedly contribute to the death of Stuart Sutcliffe

He allegedly kicked the shit out of him shortly before he died of a brain hemorrhage.
He's dead so you don't need to alledge anything! And I was looking for something a bit more specific.

DG - Me too, but it doesn't.

Good questions there. Off the top of my head only know two of them:

5) Isn't he a Harley Street doctor (not sure of his full name) that allegedly turned Lennon & Harrison on to LSD?

8) Klaus Voormann

Klaus Voorman is correct.

The doctor wasn't from London and Lennon & McCartney were already into LSD before they met him.

Wasn't "Doctor Robert" a drug dealing art gallery owner named Robert Fraser?
Apparently not. Not sure why I said apparently there though because I've never thought he was.

That Robert was certainly the one who supplied the rich and famous, including Keith Richards prior to his famous drugs bust. (It is also claimed that he had an affair with Idi Amin when serving with the King's Rifles in Africa!)

There have been many people identified as "Doctor Robert" and the old Etonian Fraser is a leading suspect. Check him out on Wikipedia.

Yes, he is mentioned in McCartney's biography, but only to specifically deny that he was the Dr Robert in the song. And name another..... ;)

The one who is actually named in that book is the same character as I have always believed it to be - suggesting that this claim is also widespread. Given that more than half of that biography is interview quotes, I prefer to make the assumption that the unquoted parts have been verified by Mr McCartney.
