Being Ill

Ok, first off i`m very rarely ill, i had a virus in 1990 (dodgy burger at the FA Cup Semi-Final against Oldham) but i`ve been up-chucking most of the day.

I made myself a Spag-Bol on tuesday evening and left some in a dish for the following day. Normally i`d freeze this but there was no room so i banged it in the fridge.

I ate it at 2PM and started being ill when i woke up at 3AM. My question is if it was the re-heated Bol how come it took 12 hours to kick in?

I have had a rough time due to food, on a few occasions. id say 12 hours is the normal time for it to kick in. as to why it takes that long i have no idea! must be something to do with the stomach breaking it down, and the bacteria kicking up inside.

Unlikely to have been the spag-bol after only two days. I leave mine in the fridge for several days, sometimes, and it's never been a problem.

It might be simply a virus you've picked up somewhere?

As DO says - pretty unlikely to be the Spag Bol unless the mince was a bit old in the first place and then the re-heating triggered off the bacteria. It depends on the food poisoning bug as to how long it takes to kick in. Mince, sausages and chicken are the 3 things I don't let go over sellby dates.

I got food poisoning about 3 weeks ago from fish & chips - woke up the following morning feeling very light headed and weak but not sick. It wasn't until the OH mentionned he had thought my fish had tasted a bit off that I thought it must have been that. It took the rest of hte day for me to feel better though and riding out 2 lots wasn't pleasant.

The mince had the 8/12 on it. It`s the only thing i`ve had recently that it could be.
I get the feeling when i re-heated it i didn`t kill off the bacteria.

I left Ireland on monday morning, i can`t believe a dodgy breakfast would take nearly three days to take effect.

p.s. I would say it was the burger, I would not eat one of those if it was free the hygiene Leaves a lot to be desired at most places that I have seen........

You've hit the nail on the head there I think. Meat has to be piping hot once it's reheated or you risk poisoning yourself. I make all of Georgias food myself, cook the meat & veg, whizz it up with a blender, leave it to cool down, freeze it in tubs, when she needs some I chuck it in the microwave, defrost then cook it on high for a few minutes then I have to blow on it to cool it down enough for her to eat it! It's a kerfuffle but so far I've not given her food poisoning. Your experience just goes to show how easily it's done.

Especially considering i`ve done all the food and hygiene courses back in the day when i was a catering supervisor. What a dufus.

I tend to think Griff talks a lot of sense on these issues. I believe her.

As a matter of interest, did you have 14 pints the night before?

It takes approximately 10-12 hours for the body to fully digest almost any kind of food other than simple sugars. If there was something wrong with it, the time it hit you would be about right. Lots of semi flat lemonade is the best cure. I had the same problem Sunday morning but put it down to Champagne, Baileys and too much dancing :D

I've only had food poisoning once and it came back up about 2 hours later, quite forcibly (I've never touched stroganoff since). So it's probably a metabolism thing regarding how long it takes your body to realise that you're being poisoned and eject said toxin forthwith.

I suppose it also depends on the type of bacteria too. Some might take twelve hours to make you sick whereas others have a more immediate effect. Last year at my father-in-laws 60th birthday dinner only two people ordered fish, my Daisy and Mr GG's nan. By the end of the meal both were feeling ill. Daisy took a day or so to recover but poor old nan was ill for about ten days.
