I know a two or three of `em weren`t exactly rock bands but you get the idea.
Mine in order of preference:

Led Zep
Sabbath
Pink Floyd
Beatles
The Kinks
Beach Boys
Rolling Stones
Bee Gees
The Who
The Doors

The Beatles are not what I would call a "rock" band, but since they are in the poll, they get my vote.

In fact, I'd contend that only Led Zep and Sabbath are "rock" bands.

I'd classify the rest as:

Pop: Beatles, Beach Boys, Bee Gees
R 'n' B: Rolling Stones
Mod: Kinks, Who
Prog Rock: Pink Floyd

The Doors? Not sure where I'd put them - I'd probably lump them in with the Blues orientated (US) West coast psychedelia scene of the late sixties even if they were from Los Angeles.

Rock has a very broad spectrum - Floyd, The Who and The Doors were deffo rock bands. Zep were Hard Rock and Sabbath were metal. I couldn`t be bothered naming the poll best 60s/70s band. Should have had Queen instead of the Bee Gees though.

I've edited my original post to say where I think they should all be.

But if we're talking best band of the 60's/70's, then The Beatles win by a distance (IMO).

Not unlike so many different bands, they evolve in terms of style and influences, later Who stuff could be described as rock, We Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Rielly and the Tommy stuff

Basing it on rock alone I've gone LedZep, too. I would've put Lynryd Skynyrd second, but you didn't have them. The Stones must take a very close second place with the list you've provided.

The Beach Boys short-headed The Rolling Stones with the long odds-on favourite The Beatles disappointing well down the field.
