In November I had an ante-post bet with Paddy Power. I'd not used them for awhile and my Debit Card had expired since the last time i'd wagered with them. So the guy dealing with me put me through to Customer Services where my card was updated. After hanging up I was worried that the bet hadn't been placed so I rang them back. The bet had been put through.

On Boxing Day the same thing happened with the bet I placed on Madison Du Berlais in the market without Kauto Star. I figured this time that bookmakers must have the same policies in place for this sort of thing so didn't bother ringing them back for confirmation that the bet had been placed. Unfortunately this time I discovered that they hadn't put the bet through. After speaking to them about this they carried out an investigation and decided that I should have confirmed the bet after my card details had been updated. They were sympathetic:ninja: though and offered me a free bet to my original stake. I accepted this.

Question is, should I? Or should I have appealed and took it further?

Also, when I rang up today to place this free bet it took the guy I spoke to about five minutes to find the Champion Hurdle market. Turns out he couldn't find a horse name Solwith in the Triumph Hurdle.........or the Gold Cup.

This is the same shower that refused to pay me out on a winning bet a few years ago and I haven't bet with them since. They claimed the odds never existed yet I had witnesses to the contrary. They offered me my stake back "as a goodwill gesture" (aye, right) but I told them to shove it. There's no way of knowing if they'll ever honour a bet.

All bets are subject to bank clearance. Is it a case that the transaction declined off of your updated card details or your expired one?

The card had expired Gear. I kind of think there is a lack of expertise at that firm - or maybe it's the number of staff they have. The guys at PP obviously put my bet on after i'd updated the card details with them - Laddies obviously could not be arsed doing the same.

Ah I see two different firms. Thats the problem with laser, you have to update every single betting account. I would say there is no standard rule in this instances but if its clear from the phone recording that you updated your debit card details for the purpose of placing the bet than it should have been honoured.

Then surely a recording of the call is available which will make it clear if the bet was placed?

Oh they've listened to the recordings - the bet was not placed. My issue is with the person I updated my card details with - surely it was up to her to advise me of this and put me through to the correct department.

Reasonable chance the conversation was recorded then, Euro. You could have asked them to pull the data file for the voice-recording - might have bolstered your case if they are on record as having accepted the bet.

Can you be more percise about the call? Im guessing when the processed the bet it was declined. Where you put through to a different department to update your details?

Yes, it was declined and I was put through to customer services. My card details were then updated and I hung up thinking the bet would then be processed. It was not.

I think that's quite harsh. When I worked at Hills, they found plenty of cases in favour of the punter.

My experiences have been universally terrible. That they can fail to understand the rules of the sports that they arbitrate on - even when explained to them at length and having had the relevant passages in the regulations highlighted for them - let alone how the bookmakers rules apply to them, is for me quite shocking.

I think this is a closed case unfortunatly. When you were switched to another department the person who you requested the bet from had washed their hands of your situation. The person in customer service should have at least requested if you required to be put through to the sportsbook. You should have rang back because the bet could not have been put through my the first person and customer service do not process bets.
