That’s it then, enjoying Madeira for a few weeks and can’t have a bet. I suppose I could try one of those VPN thingummies tan suggested, but it’s all a bit Greek to me and I wouldn’t be comfortable that it would be plain sailing without problem. So a betting sabbatical and concentration on results and building up a database of promising runs, which is a bit late in the day for the real racing and early doors for those effete flattie softies.

Anyway, a lot to look to be looking at yesterday and just a couple to start off:

Brentford Hope - Remember him? The talk of the heath after his single run as a 2yo at Newmarket and his appearance in many a “Horses to Follow” publication as a Classic contender. Didn’t run the next season until July and was a disappointing favourite in a couple of Class 5s after which he paid the price by losing his manhood.

That seemed to make a difference and he ran quite respectably in Class 2 and 3 races, with the odd Class 1 thrown in, winning a couple of times from a dozen tries. Never got anywhere near that early promise though and so tried over hurdles this season finishing second in two maiden/novice races and second again on his debut handicap. Then Wincanton last time where he won the Maiden Hurdlevery convincingly, albeit Class 4. I thought maybe, just maybe, he’s at last going to come into his own.

On to yesterday at Huntingdon and another Class4 Novice Hurdle, but a slightly tougher test which he passed quite comfortably. Onward and upward looks likely.

Angels Breath was a potentially high class chaser who won a couple of top class novice chases at Ascot for Nicky Henderson in 2019. He went wrong and didn’t run for over three years until he came out in a Grade3 at Kempton in January, by which time he was in the hands of Sam Thomas. He was surpringly well supported that day and ran well, but over-keenly, until fading towards the end and pulled up.

Ran yesterday in the Class 2 handicap at Chepstow over 2 miles (2m4f more usual) where was still a tad keen, but ran well. Up with the leader and pressing at the 8th, awkward at the 9th, mucked up the second from last and weakened quickly to finish 16 lengths second (but there was only one other finisher). He seems to be over his troubles, but whether he can get back to anywhere near his early quality - his OR was 151 - is anyone’s guess. Worth keeping an eye on him for a bit, I think.

And some flatties:

Ingra Tor did very well from his unfavourable outside to run on strongly into second over six furlongs in the 5:50 at Kempton. Mind you, Jack Channon’s horses are running very well at the moment so he wouldn’t have wanted for fitness here. I reckon he can win as long as it’s quite soon.

Also at Kempton over 5f, 3:30, Anfaal was bumped at the start and raced in the last three until round the final bend when she finished very strongly - probably the best of all - to finish third. Promising first run.

Maywake didn’t get a clear run at Redcar, 4:01, when it mattered, switched and finished strongly into third.
