#BettingPeople Steve Mellish

I've met Steve a couple of times, he's very much "what you see is what you get" person and that is not a negative in my mind. Quite happy to have a chat and share a little of his knowledge.

Thanks, Simon.

This is one I really wanted to watch. There is just something about him on Racing UK that makes him stand out. It's probably the lack of spoofing, he just knows his stuff. I wasn't aware he has been a pro punter all this time.

I've watched the first two parts so far, on this or any other of these "Betting People" things from those saying they're pro gamblers I'd be interested hear how they get on and it's not a question I've heard asked, certainly not directly.

I make a profit but I don't consider myself a pro cos it's not my only source of income nor is it a significant % even but I've been banned in all but name from a few places by restricting me to bets less than a fiver, and most recently from Boyles for just taking about £100 off them. And that's strictly as a backer as I'm not interested swing trading or arbing but I do seek out best prices like anyone with half a brain would.

This guy is well known, says he makes about 250 bets per year and states he makes a living from that. If you define 'a living' as 25k per year which isn't even the national avg wage, what does he have to be getting on to make that ?

We don't need to know is his strike rate or avg win odds, but he will have an overall roi% and from that it can be calculated what he needs to be staking for a target of just 25k from 250 bets.

The numbers below show what those avg stakes must be at different levels of roi%.

Unless he has a massive roi% he must getting a lot on, especially if his roi% is in the oft quoted 10-15% range for successful gamblers.

Does he split his bets across various accounts? Does he back on the exchanges near off when the liquidity is there?

Total Bets 250
Total Profit £25,000.00

% ROI Stake Size
5.00% £2,000.00
10.00% £1,000.00
15.00% £666.67
20.00% £500.00
25.00% £400.00
30.00% £333.33
35.00% £285.71
40.00% £250.00
45.00% £222.22
50.00% £200.00

Steve address this issue in the final part pawras in terms of (in)ability to get on for most customers with "half a brain" like you refer to.

Last of a dying breed is Steve.

Good interview Simon.

I've watched part 3 now.
Yeah addresses the issue from the 9min point in the 3rd video but, as is probably to be expected, only says so much re himself i.e. has only a few accounts now and has friends help.

Guy should have asked him what's his ROI% as that with his volume would have told us a lot.

The most interesting bit for me personally was his point where he says some jockeys don't ride out for a place, that one can be investigated with a bit of data mining & whether it's purely a jockey thing, trainer thing or trainer jockey combo thing.

Confirmed my opinion of him as a really decent down-to-earth guy who does not need to brag or spend ostentatiously.

I recall many years ago on the old ATR he revealed his 3- level staking plan (to which he has evidently kept) and in those days he said his stake was £800, £1600 or £2400.

Maybe that level has reduced because of the increased account closures and restrictions or maybe it has increased because he has a larger circle of trustworthy, discreet "assistants".

That is a really good staking plan. Keeping your biggest bets close in relation to your usual bets stops you having loose bets.

Thing is if he doesn't bet less than 2/1 and his min bet is £800 and he's averaging nearly 5 bets per week, I'd still like to know where he's getting on at cos he said he backs early so that precludes the exchanges for that kind of amounts as there isn't the liquidity, unless he's putting money on to get picked up through the day and bsp if it doesn't.
And unless he has a lot of people placing bets for him at bookies, cos a small number of regulars are soon going to get their accounts binned as well.

I've bet professionally. Getting £800 on is easy if you are good and people will help you but you will move the price.

Yeah but that being his lowest bet size and we're talking 5 times a week, week in and week out.

I bet 3 figures often enough and in my experience you need to spread it reasonably thin or you soon get binned.
