BEWLEYS BERRY was on Sunday reported to be “grand” by trainer Howard Johnson as he faced up to a future without the services of his high-class staying chaser.

Johnson reported that the ten-year-old had broken both his flexor tendons in the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown on Saturday, and that he has been brought back to his base in County Durham to recover before retiring as a hack.

“He's grand, though, and back home now,” said Johnson. “Both his front legs are in casts. When they're off we'll find a good home for him, as he'll make a nice hack for someone.”

Owned by Andrea and Graham Wylie, Bewleys Berry won four of his 19 races including the Grade 2 River Don Novices' Hurdle at Doncaster in 2005.
Runner-up to Mr Pointment in the Becher Chase at Aintree last November, he was fancied to go one better in this month's Grand National under Denis O'Regan.

However, after leading three fences out,his stamina gave out and he weakened to finish fifth behind Comply Or Die.

In four starts over the Grand National fences, Bewleys Berry finished in the money three times.
